During the Inside Pitch on Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons mentioned that with the start the Orioles are off too that it might be hard for MacPhail to convince Angelos on trading Brian Roberts. Gammons went on to say that he thinks something might happen soon involving the Cubs and Red Sox with Coco Crisp. He said he could see Sean Gallagher and another prospect going to the Red Sox for Crisp.

Why do we need another Reed Johnson? All Crisp would do is take Pie's playing time, and if that's a priority Reed can do it. Getting him for free would be a bad idea, and giving up prospects is insane, but I guess the important thing would be that he can switch hit and play all 3 outfield positions. Gammonds better be wrong. Edited by ISUCubsFan

Wouldn't make sense. I don't buy it.

Isn't that exactly why you should buy it?

Apparently, Hendry and Lou place an emphasis on the strategic value of making the other team go "FTH are they thinking?"

The Cubs better be getting either Masterson, Lowre, or Declarman (sp?) along with Crisp. BoSox has said they don't want to pick up any of Crisp's contract, which means THEY DON'T GET A TOP PROSPECT plus another prospect for him. No thanks. Unless BoSox is willing to eat half of what is owed, I would not trade for him.

Someone explain why Crisp is worth like ten times in trade value what Jacque Jones was? Crisp has been mediocre for longer than Jacque, costs more (right?), and Jacque did play a mean CF last season.

Sure; Coco Crisp is on the Red Sox, and Jacque was on the Cubs

Jacque Jones was acquired by Dave Dombrowski and Crisp would be acquired by Jim Hendry.

Isn't Gammons known for being pretty bad when it comes to scooping trades?

Also, there is no way Reed Johnson should be anything more than a platoon CF (vs LHP) for this team. The problem is that it appears that Coco Crisp doesn't hit righties that well either, so acquiring Crisp would really only be a lateral move.

What would be ideal is for Pie to start hitting!

BTW, did Gammons seem to think this trade was a good idea? Just wondering if he's off his rocker yet.

Gammons said that Lou is not happy with Pie and his .160 AVG or something to that extent, and went on to say that Crisp is the best defensive center fielder in baseball and that he could be a solution for the Cubs leadoff problem. Overall Gammons acted like it would be a good deal for the Cubs as a second option with Roberts being the first.

Peter lost me at that quote. While not a bad defensive CF, but he clearly isn't the best CF in baseball. It maybe his BoSox homerism, or him believing in the ESPN hype machine, but there are other CF who are better defensively, like Torii Hhunter, Ichiro, Grady Sizemore, Gary Matthews, Jr (even tho he is playing LF).

So if the Cubs are considering Crisp, and taking on his WHOLE contract for Sean Gallagher, they better get a good prospect back in return.

Ok, that makes me feel better. It sounds like Gammons is speculating here, and I think there are several reasons why his speculation is way off:

1) Crisp hasn't started the season that well

2) He's day to day with a hamstring injury. Lou's already frustrated enough with Soriano's leg injuries. He isn't going to want to acquire somebody with a balky hamstring and an injury history.

3) Lou is working with Pie considerably, and from all his quotes seems to indicate that he knows that Pie would continue to destroy the ball if sent down (with all his quotes about how he just wants to translate the great production every time he's at AAA), thus making it useless to send him down. They're certainly not going to do anything with Pie until this week of hands on coaching is over and he's given another chance in the field.
