Johnson was mediocre at best career numbers against righties.

Pie has nothing left to prove in the minors.

Most young players need to go through growing pains as they adjust to the majors. Pie is going to learn next to nothing getting sporadic starts and late inning replacements here or there. The Cubs need to let him work it out and try and adjust for an extended period of time, or they need to trade him while he still has significant value. The team can afford to have one fulltime player on the roster learning the ropes, especialy if they do the smart thing and upgrade at SS.

The problem is and was that there simply are no realistic options for upgrading SS. Who are we going to trade for that is going to produce at a level that would allow us to put an automatic out in the lineup for two plus months. I'm leaning toward trading Pie. He's the type of player that is hard for a contending team to break in because, as has been stated over and over, he is the type of player that is going to struggle for several months at least before he starts producing. If he's not going to be given the chance, he needs to be traded NOW, while he still has value. The Cubs gain nothing putting him on the bench and he's already destroyed AAA so there's no point in sending him down.

How do you know there are no realistic options to upgrade at SS? The Cubs have shown zero indication of even attempting to do so or think about doing it...we have no idea what teams are willing to deal. That said, as much as I would rather see a better SS brought in, Theriot is producing at the moment, which makes it even dumber that the Cubs don't play Pie as much as possible. This team CAN afford to have one slot used mostly to help a promising young players exactly because they are a contending team.

I don't know that there weren't, but you don't know that there were either. Maybe the Cubs made an offer for Tejada and the O's simply didn't like it as much as Houston's. Maybe they were quietly looking until Jan. and then turned to Roberts after they gave up on that. Anyway the point is moot, because the offseason has come and gone. The Cubs were either unwilling or unable upgrade SS at that time. Who do you see that's realistically available or is likely to be by midseason that would provide a substantial upgrade over Theriot/Cedeno? I agree that this is the position where the Cubs most need an offensive upgrade. I just don't see how they're going to acquire one.

During the Inside Pitch on Baseball Tonight, Peter Gammons mentioned that with the start the Orioles are off too that it might be hard for MacPhail to convince Angelos on trading Brian Roberts. Gammons went on to say that he thinks something might happen soon involving the Cubs and Red Sox with Coco Crisp. He said he could see Sean Gallagher and another prospect going to the Red Sox for Crisp.

Lets see Sean was born in Boston and his Family is from Boston, would I like to see this trade made??? I have no comment......... :yahoo:

Ouch... but I guess I understand.

At the same time, Sean *alone* is worth more than Crisp.

here's a better idea, give pie more than 30 PAs this year before giving up on him.

Who says they have given up on him? The comments from Lou and the extra work he is putting in with Pie himself suggests otherwise.

The Cubs have given up on Pie and hate Murton, haven't you been reading?

Well, after Reed's "The Catch" against the Nats last night, this ain't gonna happen, for sure.

Wrong. They are still looking for a LH bat, and Lou doesn't get all giddy over one play.

In this weeks power rankings Phil Rogers mentions the Cubs are still after a lefty handed bat , and that Jocketty might not wait long to deal Griffey or Dunn to free up a a spot for Bruce.

To get Dunn the Cubs have to move Soriano or Fukudome to CF. Can Griffey still play CF?

Griffey can barely play RF.

Griffey is my favorite player of all time and has been since I was like 5. I'd take him in a second if were not giving up much and much Fukudome to CF if needed.

Dunn is not what this team needs at all. He has 3 rbi's this season in games in which he didn't hit a HR. He's a great On Base machine but thats pretty much it. He's a good slugger and a terrible hitter. I've said it many times he is only good as a #2 hitter for the Cubs.

You can keep saying it as long as you want just so long as you don't expect anyone to agree.

It really doesn't matter as neither will be traded to a division rival.

I limit my reading to the non-reactionary non-extremist stable sky posters and/or sources personally. So I haven't seen anything to suggest the organization has given up on Pie. And Murton just seems to be the hard luck odd-man out.

If the Cubs got him and slotted him in the #2 spot I am fine and happy with him. If he hit 3rd,4th, or 5th it would be bad. I simply don't have a mancrush on him, and don't think he is a good hitter. Let him see fastballs and walk in front of Lee all day.

Like you said it doesn't matter.
