The whole quoting of Soto's name is pretty lame. It was funny the first time, but what is this now? The 80th time it's been done? Think of something new.

Internet fad. It won't die down, unless Soto has a terrible season.

Agreed. It was pretty annoying clicking this thread thinking there might be something new and finding that stuff.

Just wait for the game threads.

I find it pretty entertaining, though.

Really? Z was pretty lean last year. Blanco has no purpose since Geo is a good defender. I'd like them to get a better hitting backup C. When Geo sits, the Cubs will see a downgrade on offense and defense.

I don't understand this argument. The back-up catcher plays every 5th game or so and is typically the last option pinch-hit AB off the bench. Even a strong hitting catcher won't be the first or even second pinch-hit option. In other words, the role's value is defined in the games he plays, not in his pinch-hit prospect.

Would you really sacrifice 32 games of defensive performance for a few dozen (at most) extra PH opportunities?

um yeah, I never said a single word about pinch hitting.

i see (kind of) what he's saying, but he's forgetting that the backup C still has to hit in those 30-some odd starts.

I bought my Soto jersey shirt 2 weeks ago.

I'm not sure where this new version of Soto came from, but he has been a pleasure to watch. He doesn't swing at garbage, he is constantly ahead in the count and he drives the ball just about every time he makes contact.

We need to give this man his own sticky thread so that we can worship him daily.

by the way, isn't it kind of insane that soto could very well end up being the best position player the cubs have developed in the last 20 years? i mean, a year ago if you'd asked pretty much anyone about soto, they'd have told you that his ceiling was "above average backup catcher." now his projections suggest he'll become one of the better backstops in the game.

Not really, an above average backup catcher probably would have been the best position player the cubs have developed in the last 20 years.

true, the cubs' piss-poor management and player development has a lot to do with that, but bp's projections of soto suggest he could be a borderline all-star for the next several years. his projected worth is about $10-11M per year. and he could end up being jorge posada with fewer walks but better defense. i think if anyone had said all this a year ago, it would've sounded completely ridiculous.

Speaking of backup catchers, in the event that Blanco gets injured, I wonder if we couldn't squeeze one last half-season out of old Damian Miller. He's out there, and seemed to play really well for the Brewers (though maybe I only watched the games that he would win), so why not? Better than Koyie Hill.

I think BP might be wrong on the "fewer walks" predictions. If he keeps mashing AND staying patient, teams will start pitching around him more for fear of the damage he will do if they give him something to hit. Everything about this guy when you watch him makes you think we're watching a very polished and experienced veteran at the plate.

By the way, is Von Joshua the man who gets the credit for Soto's turnaround?
