When was the last time the Cubs had a catcher this good? I think it is safe to say that Soto will eclipse Barrett's best season with the club by a mile (.287/.337/.489, 16 HR, 65 RBI in 2004).

Best season for a Cubs catcher ever was Gabby Hartnett in 1930 when he went .339/.404/.630, 37 HR, 122 RBI. I think it's unlikely that Soto will do anything like that, but Soto already might be the best catcher the Cubs have had since Hartnett.

Wow, I didnt realize a Cubs catcher ever put up a line like that. Yeah, you always hear Hartnett's name in discussions of Cubs greats, but I always assumed that it was in relative terms to the stats of the day. .630 SLG?!?! In 1930!?!? Yeesh.

Why isn't Soto considered for the All-Star vote? He has better numbers than anybody as a catcher. Rather impressive.

Who says he isn't? I've got a bad feeling Brian McCann will win, but it's not like Soto isn't on the ballot.

What do you mean why isn't he considered?

It looks as though McCann is leading the All-Star votes and his numbers aren't as good as Soto's although there are very good.

Brian McCann is a known commodity. Geo's a lowly rookie that most "fans" don't know anything about. it'll be a crime if he keeps up this production and is not selected as a reserve.

Oh, I thought you were saying he wasn't on the ballot.

The answer to your question is very simple, and obvious. It's a popularity contest and Geo isn't that well known. If he keeps hitting, and keeps getting awards, all the fantasy people are going to know him, and he'll probably make the team.

Believe me, all the fantasy people know him, that's not the crowd you have to worry about.

Where exactly are you guys seeing what the all star vote counts are? I wasn't aware that they had released anything yet.

The fantasy crowd is more than just the hardcore types. There's a lot of very casual players who only look what their team is doing.

are cubs players really that obscure? cubs are probably the 3rd or 4th most popular team in baseball.

Soto just hasn't gotten the media hype yet. Kinda been overshadowed by Fukudome.

Cubs fans and fantasy types know he's really good.

I noticed they are mentioning him more & more though. He's becoming very difficult to ignore.

Don't forget Rick Wilkins's 1993.

Rookies are that obscure to the general all star voting public. Guys with a decent track record will always get the benefit of the doubt.

some have theorized (and I have yet to see it disproven) that it was actually Geo in a Jim Edmonds suit who made that catch last night

I'll buy that theory if he took off the suit when he came to bat.
