woo hoo!

just saw this: story on cubs.com.

From the article:

Sam Fuld epitomizes the way we should live our lives and approach our jobs," said AFL executive director Steve Cobb. "He's a born leader and a standout ballplayer. He is one of the most exemplary young men to grace the Arizona Fall League in its 16-year history."

Couldn't agree more. Congratulations, Sam! Couldn't have happened to a better guy.

I'm sure it does to Fuld, he's not the one if you lined up all of the AFl rosters to expect to be the MVP of the League.

He doesn't have the highest ceiling of everyone in the League, but it's a feel good story that someone with his work ethic and character can become a MVP of a league like that.

Another gem from Hendry...

"We're not going to trade Pie, and we're not going to trade [Fuld]," Hendry said. "It's pretty simple."

Awesome, Fuld is untouchable now when his value may be at its peak.

Yes, but by definition saying that they aren't going to trade Fuld makes him untouchable.

How so? They are not going to trade Fuld because there is really no interest.

There is no MLB team that is "hot" after him

The Cubs are not dead set on moving him

I don't know that this is true at all - in fact, if I recall, from AZ Phil, there were plenty of scouts "hot" for him during the AFL. And, there are plenty of teams that could use him - for instance, heard Milwaukee's Assistant GM Gord Ash this AM on XM talking about needing an "on-base guy" for his outfield - they feel like they have plenty of sluggers and need someone to get on base in front of those guys. Interesting thoughts, anyway [and I think Sam's definitely got a shot at the 5th outfield job]

I just thought i'd bump this to get something off my chest about Fuld. I kind of get the impression that everyone's opinion was negatively weighted on Fuld because we thought of him in the context of an everyday player (and Hendry absurdly stated he was basically untouchable). Even though he's not going to be that, I still can see him having a bigger impact than most think in a Ryan Freel type of mold. He's very good defensively and has one of the best eyes this system has had in recent years (which I guess might not being saying much since this is the Cubs and plate discipline we're talking about). To add onto that, BA's ranked him as our best Strike Zone judgement minor league player for the last 3 years in a row.

I know this was random, but I just think that he could be more of an asset with his approach than we give him credit for. He won't ever hit for enough power to man the starting CF spot, but if used right could still prove to be a useful player (See a slightly less versatile Freel--who'm I remember alot of people were wanting us to target back in the day).

Reggie Willits is probably a better comp for Fuld.

Willits in 1596 MiLB ABs: .301/.397/.397/.794

Fuld in 1184 MiLB ABs: .296/.377/.417/.794

Freel in 2769 MiLB: .269/.360/.397/.757

Freel's MLB stats look nearly identical, just a shade less SLG: .270/.358/.378/.736

And Fuld's defensive profile is much closer to Willits'.
