  1. I love LoMo. Though on the inside I bet he's feeling a lot more like Scarface quitting the burger job. That's video is NSFW due to some potty-mouthed potheads, just a heads up.
  2. That was awesome, thanks Tree
  3. That's actually one of the Wachowski Brothers of Matrix fame that you're referencing as transgendered and not the Coens, but I don't see why one of the Maddux bros shouldn't also venture down that road. Chicago's a progressive, tolerant place right? And if it meant a WS victory, the entire coaching staff could come to work in full Victorian ball gowns if it so tickled their fancy.
  4. I was thinking I'd like to see the Maddux brothers as manager/pitching coach in kind of the same way the Coen brother work as a director/writer team. Though traditionally their titles are different, but there is obviously a huge overlap in knowledge, experience, and abilities because they've got incredible intelligence and understanding of their craft.
  5. My little piece of obscure Cub memorabilia- I have one of those hideous neon pink hats that were a giveaway from a game in the early 90's. On it are the signatures of Chuck Crim, Heathcliff Slocumb, Shawn Boskie, Dave Otto, and BILLY FREAKIN WILLIAMS. I wish I'd gotten the HOFer to sign something else, or at least in something other than ballpoint. It's faded so bad you can hardly tell it's his.
  6. Steve Buechele and the curly golden mullet
  7. I said to a friend at the beginning of the year when he was still a Brave, "Jordan Schafer just has the look of some guy you'd buy pot from in high school". Apparently my analysis was spot on. And yeah, marijuana prohibition is a ridiculous farce and an egregious waste of funds in its policing. I think the main reason its still in place is the lobbying clout of alcohol and big pharma.

  9. Pomeranz had a perfect game going into the 7th in his debut at Rockies AA Tulsa, with only 52 pitches through 6  . Guess the time off wasn't a problem for him.
  10. I'm sure Quade would be fine, being completely hairless has got to keep you a few degrees cooler. But yeah, I've always thought the whole baseball managers wearing the unis is a bit archaic and silly- looking. Unless teams want to start bringing back player/managers, which would be awesome.
  11. After reading that piece, it made me seriously resent King. Here's somebody blessed with the talent to be a #1 overall pick and perform at a very high level in a job that 99% of American males would trade places for in a second. Maybe he should have spent a year working in a restaurant kitchen or a dimly lit cubicle or waking up a 5am to pick up garbage on a subzero morning, in order to realize that his lot in life wasn't so bad after all. Why then did he invest so much of his life putting in the time and effort it takes to make it as far as he did? Was his hatred building up gradually? If it was true that every time he heard the national anthem he had a bad day, it seems like maybe he's just wired to be miserable as some people are. If that's the case then it's good that he's sequestered off on a ranch in Wyoming and can't be a downer to all around him. Funny that he was replaced by Mike Sweeney, known as one of the most upbeat and likable guys to play in the last few decades. However, if the truth is King had some nagging, chronic injury that wasn't being disclosed, then it's a little more understandable. As for Jeff Kent, I've always though he was a jerk and not just because he took Ryno's career HR record for a 2B.
  12. Due to being incredibly busy and just letting it slip my mind, I did not get a fantasy team registered in time for opening day. I figured there have to be more folks out there in the same situation, so I've started a yahoo league that commences the 2nd week, with scoring counting from 4/11 onward. Several more slots are open, so hopefully I can get some more latecomers to join up. It's going to be an autodraft on Saturday 4/9 or Sunday 4/10. League Name: Johnny Come Latelys Password: week2herewego Please don't hesitate to jump in!
  13. Throw in my 2 cents... NL E: Braves NL C: Reds NL W: Rockies NL WC: Giants AL E: Red Sox AL C: Twins AL W: Rangers AL WC: Yankees NLDS: Braves over Giants NLDS: Rockies over Reds NLCS: Braves over Rockies ALDS: Red Sox over Twins ALDS: Rangers over Yankees ALCS: Rangers over Red Sox WS: Braves over Rangers in 6 NL MVP: Jason Heyward and Carlos Gonzales (tie) AL MVP: Robinson Cano NL CY: Ubaldo Jimenez AL CY: David Price NL Comback: Jason Bay AL Comeback: Ian Kinsler
  14. Figgins played 2B last year, but this year he's back at 3B where he's most comfortable and played the bulk of his career. I think depending on where the D'backs are in the standings Kelly Johnson could be a nice trade target. Also, the Rockies have several options at 2B in Jose Lopez, Ty Wigginton, Eric Young Jr. Those three also can play other positions, and maybe one could be an upgrade for us if the conditions were right. Ideally though one of our guys will have a breakout year and eliminate the need to look elsewhere.
  15. So he got on base one and a half times?
  16. But the deal isn't for a guy who just turned 26, it'll be for a guy who just turned 30. Who was already locked up longterm, just to reiterate that point. If he was a free agent to be in would be justifiable. Now it is not. Yeah, I guess thinking of it that way it's a little curious they chose to resign him so far in advance. From the article on mlb it sounds like the Holiday contract situation in 08 and all its unpleasantness left an impression on Tulo and the team and they wanted to to nip it in the bud before it got . I still don't think it's an awful deal, provided Tulo stays conditioned to try to avoid injury particularly the groin problem that sidelined him before. The Rockies may be overpaying in the later years, but it won't be a bust on the scale of Mike Hampton or Soriano.
  17. Yeah, I don't think the Rockies will have any problem paying Tulo. They draw a very respectable crowd most of the year, and pack the place in if they're still in contention in Aug and Sep. They've got Helton's money coming off the books after this year (Holy carp, I didn't realize he's making 19M this season!) and if they resign him it'll be a whole lot less. Plus they've got lots of very solid pieces in guys like Stewart, Smith, Fowler, Ubaldo, and Cargo (though he'll get his payday too), who should produce at an above average level for relatively inexpensive in the near future. As for the injury concerns, I think you can write off this year as a fluke. Missed 6 weeks when a HBP broke his wrist, then he comes back and hits 15 homers in the final month. Tulo is the Rockies franchise player looking forward and fans absolutely love him in Denver. For a stellar fielding shortstop who can put up MVP type offensive numbers AND just turned 26 AND exemplifies all the intangibles like "leadership" and "grittiness", I think it's a fair deal. I'd probably take him over just about anyone else making the same amount.
  18. I never knew about him until I worked on some Mariners telecasts the past two seasons. He was fun to listen to, with a wit that could still sneak up on you, and had some good exchanges with Mike Blowers. The man was an institution in Seattle and from all I heard just an incredibly kind and loving person. It's really too bad he couldn't have held on a bit longer to witness Felix take home the Cy. Rest in Peace, Mr. Niehaus. I hope you're enjoying a Grand Salami Sandwich with mustard on rye bread somewhere in the Great Beyond.
  19. You show that ham who's boss, Micah! Hopefully he'll have the same good fortune in Japan that Matt Murton has enjoyed.
  20. I think it's safe to say a major league clubhouse is not the typical workplace, and that the rules regarding alcohol and other conduct vary widely in different industries. I can relate it to when I used to work in a pizza kitchen, and after a long busy night on the line, it was nice to sit up at the bar and have a drink or two, hang out with the co-workers. Conversely, at the job I currently I have drinking is not permitted, and doing so in the break lounge even after a shift would raise a few eyebrows and probably result in some sort of disciplinary action. I think the MLB clubhouse is more akin to the first of the two circumstances. If guys are going to be hanging out, relaxing after a game playing cards or video games, they of legal age should be allowed to imbibe. It's up to the manager and veteran players to make sure it doesn't become a ridiculous frat-house situation and players that display problem behaviors associated with drinking should be dealt with on an individual basis. Though ultimately both in a restaurant and clubhouse setting, if the owner/GM/manager wants a dry workplace for their employees they have every right to make that policy. As to a shortage of ash wood for baseball bats... it's a renewable natural resource that when grown has positive environmental repercussions and can be easily harvested AND is in demand by some of the highest paid athletes in the world? Come on entrepreneurship, somebody step up and fill this market void. edit: didn't see that ash can be afflicted by some botanical disease, that's a much more complicated situation.
  21. I'm pretty sure I heard Don Sutton on Braves radio saying that if he falls short of qualifying PAs, that MLB could add an "0 for x" for his season avg, where x = the number he needs to get to 502. Of course this would cause his avg to be lower, but if he's still ranked first after that then he would win. This was news to me, has anyone ever heard of this happening?
  22. Especially amazing considering Tulo missed 6 weeks with a broken wrist, which many worried would sap his power. After just 3 HR in August he's really turned it up for the playoff push. But that god-awful hair... I know it's for a good cause but still.
  23. ? Sorry to confuse, I shouldn't expect people to know my job. I'm a master control operator working on some FSN networks, and I do mostly Rockies games, some Pirates, some Mariners. The feeds go live hours before the game and there's where I saw it.
  24. Here at work I was just watching the imcoming feed from Coors Field for tonights game, and saw a crowd gathered around a downed Rockies player, obviously injured but with a towel over his face. When they rolled him over to put him on a stretcher, I could see it was Huston Street just before they took him away in an ambulance. I was curious so I googled it and saw this on Rotoworld: http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=MLB&id=460&line=298771&spln=1 Man, that guy has had a rough go of it this year, spends half the season on the DL and then gets hit in a freak occurence like this. Update: The liner came off the bat of Ian Stewart.
  25. Just a day's drive down I 75, that's totally doable for a few days in March. Come on Florida, don't screw this one up.
