After reading that piece, it made me seriously resent King. Here's somebody blessed with the talent to be a #1 overall pick and perform at a very high level in a job that 99% of American males would trade places for in a second. Maybe he should have spent a year working in a restaurant kitchen or a dimly lit cubicle or waking up a 5am to pick up garbage on a subzero morning, in order to realize that his lot in life wasn't so bad after all. Why then did he invest so much of his life putting in the time and effort it takes to make it as far as he did? Was his hatred building up gradually? If it was true that every time he heard the national anthem he had a bad day, it seems like maybe he's just wired to be miserable as some people are. If that's the case then it's good that he's sequestered off on a ranch in Wyoming and can't be a downer to all around him. Funny that he was replaced by Mike Sweeney, known as one of the most upbeat and likable guys to play in the last few decades. However, if the truth is King had some nagging, chronic injury that wasn't being disclosed, then it's a little more understandable. As for Jeff Kent, I've always though he was a jerk and not just because he took Ryno's career HR record for a 2B.
