THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OLDE TIMEY BASEBALL MEN BECOME GM'S.

Murton is a below avg hitter for his position and has a below avg glove. I understand he's cheap but high payroll teams should attempt to do better.

I'm not sure I understand the "selling at his lowest value" argument. IMO at age 26 a .296/.365/.455 line is pretty close to his ceiling.

Murton is a useful player but he's not exactly untouchable.

He's not below average for his position. His numbers would easily put him in the upper half. He's at his lowest point because the Cubs have screwed around with using him as a backup to guys like Jacque Jones and Cliff Floyd, and then are spending this offseason doing whatever possible to put somebody other than Matt Murton in right field. He's letting everybody in the world know he's got no use for Matt Murton, so, if anybody wants him, they can get him easily, most likely for less than steller value in return.

That isn't true.

I assume you are referring to his glove. IIRC most metrics I've seen has him below avg.

age 24 - AB 140 - OPS+ 132

age 25 - AB 455 - OPS+ 104

age 26 - AB 235 - OPS+ 100

Which seems like the biggest fluke here?

Murton has had his opportunities, I'm not completely buying the Cubs have screwed him argument.

The drop off in numbers is what you get when you turn a developing prospect into a part time player.

At this point I just really hope we sign Fukudome. I mean, what would be in store if we don't (some other LH hitting OF)?

Shawn Green, Geoff Jenkins, and Luis Gonzalez. Whoever takes 2/12 first gets the honor of being the object of our hate all year.

That would be so bad.

you'd think hendry would have learned by now that lefthanded rf does not equal good after the past few seasons. those guys are clones of the cubs' previous two rf experiments.

How do the other GM's decide which one of them gets to rip Hendry off?

Sure Murton puts up decent numbers, but Floyd put up better numbers than Murton last year and people here were thrilled to see him leave. Once Soriano signed with the Cubs, Murton's days were numbered.

I almost get the impression that Jim will trade for rather than sign an OF if he can't get Fukudome (since he is so intent on LH). At least that's what I'm getting from these reports.

floyd was essentially the same player as murton last year, but 246 years older.

And Murton, for the 2nd straight year, was a stud in the 2nd half. Floyd was also good in the 2nd half, but about 75 OPS points worse than Murton.

So when Mourton gets traded are all the Murton lovers going to have a candlelight vigil outside of wrigley?

we would if he was left handed

We could all hold the candles in our left hands, as a symbolic reminder of what could have been.

EDIT: I love that you spelled it "Mourton", like we're in mourning. That's perfect.

Did hendry HONESTLY say that it would be easier if he were right handed or is that just a rotoworld smartass answer?

Because if he really said that then I vote we burn him at the stake. Literally.

Yeah, I really cannot believe he said that. Someone should fact check - I am betting it's a joke.

BTW, love your sig, Roast.

From Sullivan's article today:

"We still like Murton," Hendry said. "We think Murt's an everyday big-leaguer. He knows we all like him. Life would be a lot easier if Murton were left-handed."
