Matt Murton-OF-Cubs Dec. 3 - 10:48 am et

According to the Chicago Tribune, Matt Murton "is available for trade."

No surprise, since Murton has yet to be given an everyday job in the Cubs' outfield despite being a 26-year-old career .296/.365/.455 hitter. "We still like Murton," general manager Jim Hendry said. "We think Murt's an everyday big-leaguer. He knows we all like him. Life would be a lot easier if Murton were left-handed."

I hate this team.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OLDE TIMEY BASEBALL MEN BECOME GM'S.

Oh go bounce a soccer ball off your head!

Murton could help bring in a nice impact player despite of Hendry. I hope.

with hendry basically announcing that murton's not in the cubs' plans, i don't see how he could.

Yep. That combined with Hendry not realizing he has a decent player in Murton, and we're pretty much guaranteed to get nothing in return for Murton.

I really think a big package trade could be done to improve this team. Too late, I just saw Murton on Woot.

Murton is probably going to be like throwing down a $50 bill on top of the $70 you were offering for a $75 item. They might wind up with somebody better than Matt, but it's doubtful the player will be significantly better, and Matt won't get it done on his own anyway. The other GMs all know Hendry is focused on a LH hitting RF with speed and has no use for Murton.

This is so ridiculous.

I don't even understand this perceived huge need for a left handed bat. Did Lou and Jim just forget that our greatest struggles last year were against LEFT FREAKING HANDED PITCHERS??? ](*,) ](*,)

If I was Murton(or another young Cubs position player), I would try and become a switch hitter. You don't have to be good at it...but just the fact that you can bat from the other side of the plate...will make Jim "Ga Ga" over you.

This has become funny sad. A team should never get to the point that they think that they have gotten so good that they can eliminate most of the player talent pool and concentrate on a small percentage of players that meet the criteria of what they believe will make them a better team.

What Hendry is doing with this "I want guys who can catch the ball" and "I need a speedy lefty power hitter" is basically ignoring the ideal of "get the best player available" mentality.

Murton has next to no value on the market. The Cubs did that to him. And no matter what crap you get in return for him, there is NO WAY Murton playing for someone else will be better for the Cubs than Murton playing for the Cubs. And since that is the case, FORGET ABOUT TRADING MURTON! Now, if he's involved in a package to get a premier player, that's a different story. But, Murton on the trade market just to trade him or because he doesn't hit left handed is beyond stupid.

Someone really needs to kick Hendry extremely hard in the posterior. Does he not have advanced scouts to pound common sense into him?

Honestly, I really don't have a clue why I even care anymore.

I don't care what happens to Murton anymore. I'm inclined to think my greatest satisfaction would be in the form of someone in the media ripping Jimbo a new one on national TV as the defective, backwards thinking GM that he is.

Even a blind squirrel finds his nuts, but this guy. He just won't ever get it!

HAD to get this off my chest.

Aren't advanced scouts the guys who go to see the teams you are going to play, in advance of those games, to give you a little scouting report.

Also, Jim following the advice of the people he relies on for scouting is exactly what got them into this mess.

I really wanted to see Murton be an every day player. He's struggled at times yes, but I feel that he didn't get a fair shake last year at starting. At this point, I don't care if we trade him as long as whoever we get to replace him will be an upgrade. As far as Hendry's comments, what else is new? Having a GM like him with his old school mentality is costing us.

I think it was funny sad a long time ago. "Life would be easier if Murton was left handed." Seriously? That made me laugh, how myopic.

I'm gonna enjoy Murton having a nice little career in the majors. It's sad it won't be with the Cubs. It's also sad that Hendry's backwards 17th century thinking will tell him it was still the right move no matter how good he hits...cause ya know...right handed.

Murton is a below avg hitter for his position and has a below avg glove. I understand he's cheap but high payroll teams should attempt to do better.

I'm not sure I understand the "selling at his lowest value" argument. IMO at age 26 a .296/.365/.455 line is pretty close to his ceiling.

Murton is a useful player but he's not exactly untouchable.
