But the team's marketing campaign already is sending a strong signal to fans that the four-time All Star won't be around next season.

"It's time to say I'm gonna be here in '08,'' reads a promotional flyer mailed to season-ticket holders early last month. The only player pictured under the headline is shortstop Hanley Ramirez.

But the Marlins don't plan to waver from their initial demands of up to four "major-league ready players,'' according to sources, and they are prepared to keep Cabrera until the July trading deadline if they don't get the right deal.

I have no idea what they want/need. Can we fill their request?

Not sure. Looking at what the Dodgers and Angels have said in regards to negotiations, I could see the Marlins wanting Pie, Soto, Murton, and Gallagher.

They might prefer Marmol to one of those.

Yikes. If you can get them to replace soto with Marmol i might do it. otherwise, no. It leaves us with more holes than it fills, then.

Maybe. If they also signed Fukudome, he plays CF while Cabrera & Soriano cover LF/RF...however it gets ironed. Quite frankly, I'll live with Cabrera in the OF with his bat doing the damage that it does, especially since he said he'd play wherever his new team waned him. Make sure he hits the treadmill and start crushing.

That's true. I didn't think about Fukudome. The thought of his fat arse in right field scares me, but his bat would certainly make up for it. So I might just do that deal. If nothing else, our lineup would be sick.

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Cabrera

Soto

DeRosa

Theriot?

Something like that.

Cabrera + Fukudome = Way over budget.

In 2005 Soriano made 7.5M in his second to last year of arbi. For his last year, he submitted 12, Washington submitted 10, and Washington won. He was coming off of an 821 OPS year and an 808 OPS year...and he was turning 30.

Miguel Cabrera made 7.4M in his first year of arbi last year. Hes coming off of 966 and 998 OPS years and is 24. He'll make 12, very minimum.

Give them whatever they want. Pie, Gallagher, Veal, Hill, Marmol, Colvin...go ahead and pick 4.

Agreed. For Miggy, they get anyone, and I include Soto, although losing him would hurt the club.

In the unlikely event his case went all the way to an arb hearing, it would make for a very interesting outcome.

As I understand it, the arbiter cannot compare the player in question to free agents and their salaries until the final year of arb eligibility. I doubt there are many second year arb eligibles who are good comparisons to Cabrera.

The Angels offered Kendrick, Mathis, Santana or Adenhart and a mid level prospect. The Marlins came back and asked for all that, but with Adenhart and Santana.

In other words, the Marlins are run by idiots and the Cubs could never make a deal remotely similar to the deal the Angels offered, much less a better one.

This article supports what Meph just said.

Link.

he Angels' big offer for young hitting star Miguel Cabrera included top young hitter Howie Kendrick, young catcher Jeff Mathis, one of two coveted young pitchers -- Nick Adenhart or Ervin Santana -- plus an additional pitcher prospect described as a "mid-level'' talent, SI.com has learned.

The Angels thought that was the winning bid several days ago. But when Florida came back to the Angels and demanded that both Adenhart and Santana be included with Kendrick and Mathis, the deal fell apart. The Angels were unhappy the Marlins balked and a rejuvenation of the trade probably would require Florida coming back and accepting Los Angeles' original proposal.

Miguel Cabrera-3B-Marlins Dec. 2 - 3:07 pm et

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that talks between the Marlins and Angels regarding Miguel Cabrera hit a roadblock when the Marlins asked for both Nick Adenhart and Ervin Santana in the deal.

The Angels were offering Howie Kendrick, Jeff Mathis, one of the two pitchers and a mid-level prospect. Heyman thinks the Marlins would have to accept that offer for a trade to get done at this point, as the Angels are tired of negotiating with a team they thought they had deals with twice.

Holy crap. I agree with Meph. If the Marlins are waiting for a better offer than that, they will be waiting at the end of the 2009 season when Cabrera walks away for nothing.

No kidding. Jeez.

The "hold out for more" approach that both the marlins and twins are taking this offseason is maddening (but seemingly effective).

i don't blame the twins though. the rumored offers for santana have been incredibly weak.

I agree. The Angels have put a very nice package together though.

Meh. If you think about it, teams are really paying.a posting fee to negotiate a long term deal with Santana.
