I don't think the Cubs are going to get Greene because of what the Padres may want....depending on of course what else the Pads acquire during the off season SS wise.

The Cubs nixed a Khalil Greene deal at the trade deadline, unfortunately. I believe it was Greene for Pie straight up, would have been a great move.

Where did you hear this? I don't remember hearing this rumor.

This is the source of the Pie-Greene business:

The Padres were rebuffed when they asked about Cubs center fielder Felix Pie in May – talks that, had they progressed, likely would have included shortstop Khalil Greene.

So it seems to me that SD's version of Phil Rogers or Sullivan added the Greene part. I'm not saying this is what happened but all together possible.

Why would the Cubs trade Pie for Greene straight up? Has anyone ever looked at Greene's career numbers in terms of OBP? If everyone is accepting adding players who know how to take pitches and draw walks (aka OBP monsters) as the Cubs main priority this offseason, Greene doesn't help you with that. I'll stick with Theriot despite his defensive inefficiencies.

Greene is absolutely destoyed by playing at Petco. It is the best pitcher's park in MLB by a huge, huge margin. Away from home, he's a solid .800+ guy.

Greene would be an excellent #6 hitter for us. That would allow you to hit Soto 7th - much less pressure.

It would cause me a lot of gastrointestinal distress to trade Pie, but, with Colvin in the system, I would probably do it for Greene.

Greene's power numbers on the road have certainly been impressive, but we can't discount his OBP struggles:

Road splits

2004: .301/.353/.543/.896

2005: .244/.308/.465/.773

2006: .280/.356/.507/.863

2007: .288/.322/.519/.841

Not that I'd complain about having those numbers towards the bottom of our order, of course.

As did yours truly.

Let's reunite a couple of Bubbas in the Cubs organization!

Well his average IsoD based on that has been 56.5. Not great, but not terrible. 2007 was his worst year in those terms, though.

Well, with all due respect to OO, IMB posted that picture like over a year ago.

Still - it's hilarious.

If that's the case, it's not nearly as funny. :P

No real news, but heres the latest on Rotoworld with Tejeda which will probably be the first step in us getting Roberts

Sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthat that, although the two sides have discussed a trade, the Orioles and Astros are not close to a Miguel Tejada trade.

The Astros apparently believed a trade was possible Wednesday night, telling at least two other clubs that they were on the verge of a major deal. They were apparently working on a four-team trade at the time. Rosenthal doesn't believe an offer of Chris Burke, Adam Everett and a pitcher would be nearly enough for Tejada. The Orioles, though, may have to come down on their price if they really hope to rebuild.

I fear this writer may be correct - Gallagher and Murton ain't going to do it.

If you want my opinion, here it is: The only reason you trade Roberts is the same reason you trade Bedard – because you don’t think he’ll sign an extension. Roberts is tired of losing and, as much as he likes Baltimore and is such a presence in the community, he won’t be shedding a bucket of tears if he’s playing for another organization next year. And the Orioles aren’t giving him a lot of reasons to stay. They’re set up to lose again in 2008 while team president Andy MacPhail implements his rebuilding plan. Roberts would prefer that the Orioles ditch any plans to trade Miguel Tejada, which isn’t likely to happen. Get something for Roberts while you can, because it becomes harder as his free-agency year approaches.

I’m just not overly excited about the Orioles getting pitcher Sean Gallagher and outfielder Matt Murton in return. There’s the rub. I don’t think that’s enough.

Roberts isn’t easily replaced in this lineup. He’s an above-average defensive second baseman and leadoff hitter, and one of baseball’s most prolific basestealers. He’s also a good guy in the clubhouse. Nobody has ever accused him of being a cancer or a bad influence on the younger players.

Removing Rich Hill and Felix Pie from the equation makes the trade sound a lot less appealing to me. And the Orioles don’t have to deal Roberts. If that’s the best they can get for him, I say hold onto him.

Just my opinion.

Posted around an hourish ago. I don't know if he's speculating based on rumors, but he says talks with all of the Orioles are intensifing:

• The Orioles have intensified talks with several teams to trade shortstop Miguel Tejada, second baseman Brian Roberts, and left-hander Eric Bedard. The Astros and Angels are the most interested teams in Tejada.

Think we could work out a 3-way with the O's and Angels that ends up with Miguel in Anaheim and Roberts in chicago?

Yes. Someone posted a deal earlier that made perfect sense.

I don't know what's all that exciting about trading players making the minimum salary for a guy who is a marginal upgrade to the guy we currently have at his position.

I'm not sure theres any deal I'd really like unless Baltimore took back some salary. Even a Marshall/Murton deal would make me say "meh" because I'd rather use them in a package with others to upgrade a position of need.

Alright, jsut back from classes. Give me the lowdown.

Not too much. Don't know how long you've been gone, but basically the rumored deal is Gallagher+ another player (likely Murton). Pie would not be the other player, and the Cubs have denied Hill being in any talks and don't plan to include him in any.

If they come away with Marshall/Gallagher, Murton and Cedeno, plus 2+ solid young guys for each of those others, it could be a relatively successful offseason for Baltimore. Given that Bedard wants out anyway, they might be able to plug several holes, while giving up nothing but guys that probably won't be there the next time they flirt with .500 anyway.

Yeah, only been gone a few hours. I've heard that, jsut wondering if it's any closer to getting done and apparantly not.

Didn't the Cubs draft Greene and he opted to not sign?

Yes, 14th round in 2001. Couldn't get a deal done.

I was thinking the Cubs drafted him twice and he didn't sign either time, maybe I'm wrong.

I have to agree with this sports writer. MacPhail would not be doing his job if he didn't bring back either Pie or Hill in a trade for Brian Roberts. At the same time, Hendry would be insane to give up Hill or Pie to fortify a position he already has a great supply of - middle infielders. I just don't see a match here unless MacPhail's willing to expand the deal to include Bedard at which point Hendry should be open to trading Hill and Pie. However, giving up Pie would create a hole in CF that I'm not sure Sam Fuld can fill. Of course, JH could turn to the FA market to sign a replacement but the cheap CF's don't make sense. Bradley's about to re-sign with the Pads, Cameron has to sit out the first 25 games, Lofton would be viable his defense is suspect, Rowand is too expensive. The only way I see a trading working out for both side which nets the Cubs Brian Roberts is the following.

1. Cubs sign Fukudome to play CF

2. Cubs trade the Orioles Rich Hill, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno, and their choice of Sean Marshall or Sean Gallagher for Brian Roberts & Erik Bedard

3. Cubs platoon Matt Murton and Mark DeRosa in RF

Lineup:

1. Soriano - LF

2. B Rob - 2b

3. Lee - 1b

4. Fukudome - CF

5. Ramirez - 3b

6. DeRosa/Murton - RF

7. Soto - C

8. Theriot - ss

9. Pitcher (Bedard, Z, Lilly, Marquis, Dempter/Hart/Marshall or Gallagher)

No. I'm not sure what I (or some of you guys) is missing here, but haven't Hendry and Lou made themselves perfectly clear that Theriot will, in about 99% likelihood, be our SS?
