Roberts to Cubs: No deal?

The chances of the Orioles trading All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts to the Cubs seem to diminish each day.

Roberts is a favorite of Peter Angelos, the one player who maintains an open dialogue with the owner. Thus, Angelos is reluctant to trade him — and especially reluctant if the Orioles do not receive a knockout package in return.

At this late stage, such a package almost certainly would need to include shortstop Ronny Cedeno, who would take over at shortstop, with Luis Hernandez moving to second base.

The Orioles, though, would be left with perhaps the game's worst middle infield. And they probably could get Cedeno, who is out of options, in a separate deal.

Cedeno, who has a .277 on-base percentage in 741 major-league plate appearances, is more advanced than Hernandez, a gifted defender who has only a .296 OBP in 2,385 minor-league PAs.

The best solution for the Orioles might be to hold off trading Roberts until the July 31 non-waiver deadline, when more suitors might emerge, enabling the team to strike a better deal.

The problem with that idea is that Angelos might balk at making a bad club even worse in the middle of a season, even though there is little difference between 100 losses and 110.

Just sounds like Rosenthal speculating.

Seems the Roberts trade is beginning to "s-word" into oblivion.

This article is more telling than Rosenthal's speculation. I think Andy wants to now wait and see the Cubs players perform in Spring:

MacPhail said there was nothing about the timing that would throw the trade off. He said that major trades can happen in Spring Training and he knows that he's not locked into keeping Roberts just because he reported to Spring Training.

"If you've waited this long, by and large, most clubs will go out and see the players that have been bandied about," he said. "And to get more recent information than they have based on last year -- which I think whatever trade rumor you're reading about -- that's probably a logical step for that team to take at this point in time."

"It's a great organization." "I've never played there, but it looks like a fun place to play. And they've certainly made an effort to put themselves in a situation to win. Yeah, I think the bottom line is I do want to win. Would I like it to be here? Of course. This is all I know. But for this organization, if it's better to send me to another place and get a couple of pieces for down the road, I understand that, too. The sooner the chance I get to win, the better off."

The english language cannot express how much I just do not care at this point. He doesn't play SS, so what is the damn point of trading anyone to upgrade over (I assume) DeRosa. I just don't freaking get it.

So Roberts had this to say about possibly being traded...

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-schmuck0219,0,3568900.column

"It would be hard to leave here," he said. "It would be weird to leave here. But an opportunity to win in the right situation, I don't think anybody would necessarily argue against it."

This story on Roberts is somewhar similar but I thought I would post it anyway.

Anyone else interpreting this as Roberts really wanting to come to Chicago (i.e. wanting to leave Baltimore)? All players will give the stock line about "being hard to leave here." But talking about winning sooner -- he's no dummy, he knows that's never going to happen in Baltimore.

B-Rob is as "sick" of all this as we are. get it? sick?

The Baltimore Sun reports that Brian Roberts left Orioles camp Wednesday morning because of a stomach ailment that required a visit to the hospital.

The team insists that the situation has nothing to do with ongoing trade rumors. Roberts indicated Tuesday that he wouldn't be against a trade if it gave him a better chance to win. Asked specifically about potentially being dealt to the Cubs, Roberts called them "a great organization" and indicated that he wouldn't mind playing in Chicago. "It's just a touchy situation just because I love the Orioles," Roberts said. "Wherever I am Opening Day, I'll do my job."

Brian Roberts isn’t in camp today. But a team spokesman rained on our conspiracy-theory parade by informing us that Roberts has a stomach ailment and visited a local hospital this morning. His name is listed on the team’s medical report. He hasn’t been traded. He isn’t taking a physical at the Cubs’ camp. He isn’t having breakfast with Ernie Banks.

I’m still checking to see if Ronny Cedeno has a stomach ache.

These comments of his are reasonably unusual. It's pretty much him saying "I'd like this trade to happen" as diplomatically as possible.

Man, just when you think this thing is dead, it gurgles back to life...

Levine is reporting that the latest on the Roberts trade is that Baltimore is going to send some scouts to our camp before games even start (just to watch workouts) to get a look at what they might be getting in a deal. Bruce feels that it's a bit odd, as MacPhail should have a good handle on what the Cubs have, anyway.

Also says there is no question that the Cintron acquisition was tied to the potential Roberts deal in that they want to have him around if/when they ship Cedeno to Baltimore.

I posted that on OH and bigbird was the first to reply with...

They are already there

Oh what great insider information bigbird. Implying that you already knew about about reported information and then adding an unverifiable claim to it.

It seems pretty obvious that both teams are trying to hold out as long as possible to see who flinches first. Maybe Roberts comments yesterday will speed up the process.

They probably want to see if the prospects made any progress over the winter.

Has anyone ever heard rumors of this on and off again bs with any other trade? I don't remember a trade not going down, or going down with all this speculation and talk.

Maybe Arod, but everyone pretty much knew where he would end up anyways.

Johan too.

I'm sure a lot of teams fans have daily debates about potential trades. They just do it within the confines of their own communities. I bet the average Blue Jays or Angels fan would probably not even know about this potential deal, nor all the crap that has gone along with it.
