"Hart and Gallagher also did not pitch today. Don't know but If I hope it has nothing to do 'trade related'"

I don't think Z or Lilly pitched today, either. Hmmmmm. . .

Sean and Kevin did pitch but they threw early at 0800. I will be in AZ next week. \:D/

Good to know. Thanks. Just curious, does Hendry know that Gallagher has increased his velocity and has looked really good out there? Maybe if he knows(he might already know so) he would be a lot more resistant to trade Sean.

I see little reason to think Pie won't succeed in the majors. I really don't want to trade him for anything except certifiable major league talent at a position that needs upgrading.

I don't either but I think it depends on how ready he is and how much the Cubs think they need out of the CF position to be able to compete for the WS.

How long you out there for? I'll be there the following week...I'd be happy to trade you a couple beers for an autographed baseball :D

Does anybody actually think this team as is can do anything serious in the playoffs? Because I certainly don't. I think this is about an 87 win team and not close to a realistic World Series contender.

That's what we have the trade deadline for.

I can almost guarantee that if the Cubs make the playoffs, you'll see new faces on the playoff roster.

Why is it acceptable to wait until the trade deadline to make improvements that you know are neccessary? So we can pay more?

Trust me, I am in favor of making more moves this offseason to improve the team, but I think Hendry thinks this team can succeed and might be done for now. If improvements are necessary, I'm sure he'll do something at the deadline.

Because it takes two teams to make a deal. If the other team says no, you can't make a trade. No team finishes the season with the same 25 it starts with.

Actually I will be in Mesa from March 1/10th and would love to take you up on your offer. ;)

I know, but there are always guys available. Renteria, for example, would have been an enormous upgrade and he was had for realtively cheap. There are always players available.

thanks for the update Bruce. I've read that the o's are watching the cubs lower level minor leagues to put some players together w/ Gallagher that would not affect their 40-man. Do you know if there is any truth to that? Also, if Soriano's legs do not come around, don't you think JH will be more likely to cave in to MacPhail's demands? Also, I've heard JH is looking at two trades specifically. Assuming one is still the Robert's deal, what do you think the other one is? The Byrd trade or would it possibly be a starting pitcher upgrade like a Rich Harden or Blanton move?

The playoffs are a crapshoot, for the most part. Having a "leadoff" hitter wont change that. Having another very good SP might, but that's about the only thing. As presently constructed though, the Cubs are a slight favorite to make the playoffs, and then we have about a 12.5% chance once we get in, just like everybody else.

The Byrd trade is not active at all right now. I doubt they're looking at starting pitching. The only sweetener Hendry might add would be from the lower minors. The Orioles must be "watching" them in a figurative sense since they haven't reported for spring training yet.

Bruce, I know it's early, but how do the guys look? Anyone catching your eye? Anything impressive yet?

Wow, after re-reading that, I sound like I'm back in High School waiting for a Prom date. #-o

I just miss baseball. \:D/

As for the trade deadline, I'd imagine the options available then will certainly look different from those up for grabs now.

Any updates on trades that could happen, Bruce?

I'm told nothing serious is going. All is quiet right now.

I'm a little disappointed to hear that, but thanks for the info.

Thanks Bruce, and I'm not disappointed at all. Every trade rumor I've heard in the past two months is a big loser for the Cubs. They should stand pat until the ASB, because there are bound to be better trade targets by then.
