Apparently Pie or Colvin won't be neccessary to make a Roberts trade happen.

Dan, Rockford, Ill.: What would the Chicago Cubs have to include in the rumored Brian Roberts deal to make Andy MacPhail pull the trigger? Do you think a Roberts trade will happen before the season starts?

Dan Connolly: I think a trade still could happen before the end of March. The Cubs covet Roberts, they want to win this year and he's a perfect leadoff man/gritty competitor for manager Lou Piniella. And, after the Erik Bedard trade, there is no question the Orioles are rebuilding. It just comes down to whether the Orioles like the package offered by the Cubs for their most popular player.

My guess is it is going to take two legitimate pitching prospects and a couple other guys. We've heard a lot about pitcher Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton and shortstop Ronny Cedeno as a package for Roberts. But I think the Orioles view Cedeno and Murton as at least somewhat similar to what they already have in Luis Hernandez and Luke Scott (although Murton's a righty while Scott's a lefty) and so I don't think that package gets it done. I was under the impression that the Orioles wouldn't move Roberts without one of the Cubs' two young outfielders, Felix Pie or Tyler Colvin, included. But I have been told now that's not necessarily the case. An educated guess says that Gallagher and either pitching prospects Donald Veal or Jose Ceda along with a couple lesser players would have to be involved for it to happen. We'll see.

OH NO, ANOTHER MONTH OF ALL OF US FANS HAVING TO DO ASOLUTELY NOTHING.

My thoughts exactly. I really don't get what people are dreading. Another month of what? Speculating? Just don't come in the thread if you don't want to speculate on it. Amirite?

AZ Phil is reporting that Pie did not practice with the team today. I'm going to go ahead and speculate that Pie was getting his physical and is part of the Roberts trade.

If true, Lou and Hendry must really like Fuld.

One, I think it would be a bad deal if Pie is included in the package to get Roberts. Two, if for some reason Hendry is that dumb, he has to have some sort of backup plan in place because there's no way Fuld should be a starter.

If true, I hope it's only Pie for Roberts straight up. #-o

Or they just hedge that bets that Colvin or E-Patt will pay off in a year or two and sign Lofton in the meantime.

Hart and Gallagher also did not pitch today. Don't know but If I hope it has nothing to do "trade related"

Good Lord.

I doubt they're being traded, but if that was the case, two decent or one slamdunk porspect better be coming back with Roberts.

After seeing yesterday's three team 11 player Bulls trade go through in like 45 minutes I have no idea why this has to take over 3 months to complete.

Exactly..Also the Jason Kidd trade..These trades happen out of nowhere and get done right away..Why do we have to wait so freakin long and hear rumors for like 4 months

Neither Angelos nor MacPhail were involved in those trades. Hence, they're done lickety-split.

Pie for Roberts negates any added benefits over DeRosa if Fuld is Pie's replacement.

Not that I would advocate Pie for Roberts, but not if you then trade the other parts we've talked about trading for Roberts (Gallagher, Murton, et al.) for a good CF.

Or just signed Lofton (is he still out there?), I guess.

I agree completely. The "get it done NOW so that fans can be happy attitude" strikes me as eerily similar to the "let's get rid of Prior and Wood so the fans can move on" attitude.

Don't worry Payton is coming along with Roberts.

although Harden seems like a stretch considering Oakland really has no reason to move him at this point.

Harden's just crapping away service time and getting more expensive by the year. If he gets injured again this year, he's pretty much going be in the position that the Cubs were with Prior this year.

Gallagher, Veal, Cedeno, and Fontenot for Roberts and Payton.

I dont mind that. I would miss Gallagher. I am not sold on Veal or Cedeno. The Fontenot era was fun while it lasted, but bye-bye!

And  on Payton. I don't like him at all on this team.

Sean and Kevin did pitch but they threw early at 0800. I will be in AZ next week. \:D/

It seems like you're contradicting yourself. You wouldn't mind trading for Payton, but you don't like him on the team. What do you want the Cubs to do with him after trading for him if you don't want him on the team?

Not only is flu season in full swing, but a lot of these guys are making the trip to Phoenix from some extremely cold weather areas and the climate change causes all kinds of havoc this time of year.

Not saying anyone that's missing any time is sick, but I'd tend to lean towards that being more likely to happen than guessing a trade is going down each time someone misses practice.

As long as Payton is a throw-in on the Roberts deal and he understands his role (4th OF), I think he might help. I think he is preferable to anyone we could get in a separate trade (plus we would have to give up more prospects in a separate trade).
