So the Roberts deal could REALLY be close?

Brian Roberts deal was {index finger and thumb an inch apart) this close back in December. Near a month and half later....JUST imagine how much closer they really are.

I will make a bold prediction here:

This will be the longest thread of the offseason.

I just remembered this prediction Tim made back at the end of October in the thread about ARod opting out... boy was he wrong! But hey, don't worry Tim, I don't think anyone saw this behemouth coming....

Cubs/Brian Roberts Update

Buster Olney has the latest on the Cubs' talks to acquire second baseman Brian Roberts. According to Olney:

Sources involved in Baltimore's trade talks with Chicago expressed confidence that at some point, the Orioles and Cubs will finish the proposed Brian Roberts deal.

Olney says Sean Gallagher would be the centerpiece of the deal. On February 3rd, ESPN's Jayson Stark said Gallagher or Sean Marshall would be included, but beyond that nothing has been decided.

NO! No Marmol stupid stupid stupid

Truth be told, trading a reliever with such high value (probably his peak right now) would probably be a smart move. For Roberts, however, not so much.

Yeah, I bet the Yankees wish they had been smart enough to trade Mariano Rivera ten years ago.

Just for the sake of updating something:

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer believes the Erik Bedard-to-Seattle deal will be announced Wednesday.

It's been quiet today, and Bedard told associates Tuesday afternoon that nothing was happening yet. Still, all signs point to this getting done.

If this continues, they are going to have to rename Xeno's Paradox...

Anybody we know, or were you strictly a lurker? I was a regular at that joint in '01.

Pretty much the only people I remember are you, NCCubFan...and that's about it as most seem to have changed their names. I never posted much, but when I did I was DiceMan. Played in a few yahoo fantasy leagues with people. Trying to make my comeback now.

I don't remember you being in any of the fantasy leagues I was in, but I do remember you being in a Sporting News league I was in before I started participating in Yahoo. Some of the people from that league were Tehmpus (he organized it), Cubman15, BigbadB, and teencubfan.

Rosenthal still think the Orioles are going to demand Pie. And that the deal might not go through at all.

The Orioles and Cubs have spoken infrequently over the past several weeks, sources say, and while some Cubs officials believe that a deal remains possible, others aren't so sure. The Orioles are likely to insist on Pie, a player the Cubs are not willing to move in a package for Roberts ...

Since I don't have anything of quality to add to the Roberts discussion, of course neither does anyone else, I would like to say...

GR, how do the Dogs keep pulling those games out? I've watched a couple of the games on the Connections channel, and they keep pulling victory out of the jaws of defeat. It's looking like they only have a couple of tough games left to run the table. There's an outside shot both they and Butler are Top 10 when they play on the 23rd. Should be a great game.

It's basically 2 teams going back & forth about players in a possible trade; i.e. exactly what every GM for every team does every day during the offseason.

The fact that it got leaked to the press and people started running with it doesn't change whether or not it was an imminent deal. I don't think it ever was, based on what I'm seeing. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but I don't think anyone was ever getting out their ballpoint pens.

Do they still use ballpoint pens?

I don't know. They're my alma mater, but I never get to watch the games and I don't watch ESPN or any other highlight show anymore, so all I get is the box score & recaps. They do have some talent this year, which they haven't had for a while. I'd love to see them run the table the rest of the way and actually get a team in the tourney that they have a chance to beat.

If Young, Korver, Houston, Emmenecker and Cox can stay healthy, they'll go places. If one has a down game the others pick the team up. It seems like they spend the first half figuring out who's on and who's not, then they spend the second half feeding whoever is hot. All of those guys have carried them at some point this year.

I'm not a big fan of theirs, but I am happy for the school and fans, they haven't had much to be happy about since Lloyd and Kreklow. Even if it's a one year thing, I'm still happy for them.

BTW, my cousin played football there for Chuck Shelton. He was on the same team as Yagelski and Dunsmore.

I go to ISU and was obviously at the game last night. Drake is good shooting team, I think they hit 6 three's in a row at one point. They also execute their plays well. I don't think they are top 20 in the country material though. If they aren't hitting their outside shots they really struggle to get anything going inside. Big win for them last night, and big loss for us.

I believe Hosak was in that one, too.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Erik Bedard stayed at home in Ontario on Tuesday, suggesting that the trade to Seattle "remains a day or two away from completion."

Bedard will need to take and pass a physical in Seattle at some point before the trade can become official. Meanwhile, the Seattle Times speculates that a press conference announcing the trade could come as soon as Wednesday.

Note: Important points bolded.

Is there any beat writers or "insiders" that really have inside information, or am I fully qualified sitting right here at my computer knowing no more than anyone else? Waiting for baseball and hearing the same garbage rumors recycled makes me want to :banghead:
