Two Questions:

so what are the odds you guys think Roberts is still coming here?

Has anyone heard anything about another pitcher were after if were going to put Marshall and Gallagher in the deal?

The Baltimore Sun writer was on the radio and said that if the Cubs don't up their offer for Roberts then he doesn't think he'll be traded. I don't see us putting both Gallagher and Marshall in the deal. Maybe Gallagher and Marquis. I see something like Gallagher, Colvin, Cedeno for Roberts and Payton.

I would take that! I know some of you guys would be apposed to it since the need at SS, but payton could probably platoon with Pie right?

I could platoon with Pie, but just like Jay Payton, I would suck at it.

Probably worse than Byrd overall, but much better for what the Cubs would use him for. Payton has put up at least a .750 OPS against left-handers each of the last 5 years. Byrd's better against right-handers than Payton, but the Cubs should be playing Pie against right-handers anyway. Payton is way overpaid this year, but as long as the Cubs were willing to take on that salary he'd be a useful piece to the ballclub.

The Hendry should stand firm with his offer. The Cubs DON'T NEED Brian Roberts. They have a pretty solid 2B in Mark DeRosa. So Hendry shouldn't be held over the barrel for Brian Roberts. A speedy 2B is not a need for the Cubs, but a luxury, and if Baltimore is trying to screwed the Cubs in this deal, then the Cubs should back away. Brian Roberts isn't worth the trouble, to be honest.

Yeah but the way you guys are making it sounds that doesnt seem like they are screwing with us with the deal?

I mean Colvin Ive herd alot of negatives. Yea Gallagher hurts, but you have to give up something to get something and Cedeno id like to keep but probably wont be able to.

Wait. You sayin' yet another Cubs top pick has been wasted?

I wouldn't call it "wasted" if we end up trading him for a tangible asset like Roberts. :D

I'd say that makes it an even bigger waste.

Nothing's wrong with Colvin. He's a solid, not great, prospect. He has the potential to be an above average producer in CF.

It was a very poor draft pick.

The dark passenger won't let me answer that.

Amazing. People sit up and cheer when when Jim Hendry trades Jacque Jones and Will Ohman to "save money" but they get excited about the idea of taking on Jay "I'm worthless and am set to make $5 million this year" Payton. Honestly, how can people be so gung-ho to get rid of Dempster and Marquis's salary just to take on Payton for $5 million? It makes no sense.

Re: Colvin. Colvin's pick was a waste considering who we should've taken. Even trading Colvin doesn't redeem him - what would've Travis Snider, or Chris Marrero's trade value have been? I think everyone on this board made a better first round choice than Hendry did, unless you were one of the Drabekites.

Well said, APINSG.

Colvin still has time to develop, but he isn't gonna amount to anything if he continues to swing at everything.

Cubs prospect kiss of death. You're basically saying he won't develop. Or his upside is, what, a typical Jacque Jones year? Who cares at this point, I'm fine with trading him too. He's just another product of Hendry's weird man-crushes: He's a "good athlete" with "tools" but has no appreciable skills. He steals bases just well enough for people to overrate their impact. He has strike zone discipline issues but it's okay because he needs a decade to adjust with a wood bat. And I think the worst crock of an explanation given by Hendry was the whole runaround about Colvin being "a winner" because he played on the Clemson team and "a good clutch hitter." Who cares, find someone who can be a real quality major leaguer.

The worst was Wilken trying to sell us that he was another Alex Rios. Great, after he sits in our lineup for two years doing nothing we might have something. I'll check back in 2013.

OH has a link to a Cubs board that claims to know that Sherrill will be flipped to the Cubs in the Roberts deal. It also goes on to say that it assures two pitchers going back to Baltimore. If true, my guess would be Gallagher and Marquis (and probably a position player) I don't know anything about the blog so take it for what it's worth. Link

Once completed the deal will likely be announced this afternoon or tomorrow morning. League Officials now expect the deal that would send Roberts to the Cubs to be finalized and completed by the weekend. They now expect that George Sherrill to be part of the deal. The O's have no use for a 31 year old reliever in there pen and want to get younger. Sherrill will ensure that the O's will get at least two pitchers in the deal from the Cubs.

Remember to take everything you hear about this deal with a huge grain of salt. Thanks to David Gerstman for the heads up.

I can easily see that being true. Hendry would drool over a reliever like Sherrill, who had an absolutely outstanding year last year.

That said, I see no reason to trust that site.
