One baseball source said that there is a three-player deal on the table that would include a starting pitcher coming back to the Orioles.

MacPhail said the Orioles remain hopeful of adding a reliever with closer experience to potentially serve as a one-year stopgap with closer Chris Ray and setup man Danys Baez expected to miss the entire season after having Tommy John surgery.

Any chance they might want Dempster (closer) and Gallagher/Marshall (starter) and maybe one of Murton/EPatt/Fox? That could help the Cubs payroll out a bit too!

If Hendry likes Roberts as much as he liked Pierre, this deal will be Marshall, Gallagher AND Veal for Roberts.

If you can get Roberts for that trio, you do it without a second thought.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with that deal.

ESPN's Amy Nelson says Rich Hill is not currently involved in the Brian Roberts trade talks between the Cubs and Orioles.

Nelson mentions names like Felix Pie, Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher and Donnie Veal. She also says that a deal could happen quickly or not until after something gets done with Erik Bedard or Miguel Tejada. We're not sure what's happened more this week: ESPN writers contradicting each other or contradicting themselves.

It's possible they could have interest in Dempster, but the Cubs would likely have to take a salary back in the deal (Payton).

i wouldn't trade pie, hill or marmol in a deal for roberts.

whatever upgrade he would be over derosa (if any) isn't worth it.

well I think that there is no question that he would be an upgrade over Derosa there is no question there. I wouldnt trade Hill out of those 3 I would say.

The latest update on ESPN 1000 had Levine saying Cedeno would be part of the deal if it went down.

Wow, that is some incredible insight.

If Cedeno's in the deal, I want Tejada back. Cedeno is a pretty good bet to out-produce Theriot next season and Theriot is just not going to cut it full-time at SS next season. If we go into opening day with Theriot at SS, I will not be happy.

From the ESPN blog...

If Brian Roberts is traded to the Cubs, it's believed that it might not happen until the Orioles complete a trade for either Erik Bedard or Miguel Tejada. According to a source with knowledge of Baltimore's trade talks, the O's have had so much interest in their players that they "have a lot on their table." But the relationship between Andy MacPhail and Cubs GM Jim Hendry dates back several years, so a trade could happen faster than it would with other clubs. Rich Hill, originally thought to be part of a deal, is currently not in the discussions. Instead, Chicago likely would send upper-level prospects to Baltimore. Among the names being considered are Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, Felix Pie and Donnie Veal .

You're a little late to the party. That's been posted about 5 times now.

If the Cubs do get Roberts, Derosa could get spot starts at 2B vs. tough lefties. I'd like the possibility of Roberts on this team, they obviously need someone at the top who can get on base. There's no reason not to expect Derosa not get 400ABs next year in a supersub role, even last year despite the Cubs staying unusually healthy, he would been in a position to get enough ABs to justify his undervalued contract.

The question becomes would Pie be included and if he is, how much does that increase the importance of locking up Fukudome and poss. settling with Murton in RF?

What's your opinion on Pie, based on what you've seen? Do you think the hype is legit or do we have another Corey Patterson on our hands?

Cut him some slack. Things are happening so quickly in this thread that he probably missed the other posts.

can't...pull...self...away...from...computer....

I did not think I would be this interested in the winter meetings this year, but it's a pleasant surprise.

I think in all likely hood, I think it could get done for marshall, murton, epatt and veal. At least that seems fair to me.
