I heard the Levine thing as well. He was asked if any other teams were interested in the Cubs "extra" starting pitchers. He said he knew Boston and Anaheim were interested in Marquis and said if it is a deal with Boston, Crisp will be coming back. It didn't sound like he was throwing Crisp out as an idea, rather saying if Marquis is traded to Boston he had no doubt it would be for Coco.

That said, he is Bruce Levine, so it's all probably BS anyway.

Bruce Miles said earlier in this thread that the Cubs aren't really interested In crisp and that they don't see him as an upgrade. I'd very much believe Miles over Levine.

A large part of Mr. Miles' point was that the Cubs don't like Crisp's contract. If you can move Marquis in the process, that becomes largely irrelevant.

Not really. I believe his exact words were "they judt don't see him as an upgrade".

At its hottest, the Cubs' interest in Crisp is lukewarm. First off, they don't like his contract. Second, what happens if you get him and Pie shows signs he's "gotten it" in spring training and Colvin progresses at the plate and shows he might be able to play center field. You're then stuck with Crisp, who is blocking the paths of two players.

They also don't see Crisp as being that much of an upgrade.

See, I can quote him too.

Anyways, he said "they don't like his contract", not "they can't take on his contract because of payroll issues". Just because they can unload Marquis' salary doesn't mean they suddenly like Crisp's salary more.

It will be our responsibility (much like the Knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) to protect this thread and keep it alive so long as we live - and Brian Roberts is not yet a cub. I envision the year 2078 when our children's children are on NSBB talking about baseball on played on the moon (The Lunar Lions? The Sea of Tranquility Stars?) that even though Brian Roberts is not yet a Cub, some day he will come again and be traded to the Cubs or signed by Jim Hendry, IV.

So yer saying this thread will continue unless Elsa crosses the seal?

Yes. And remember: Only the penitent man will pass.

Little known fact: in Latin "Brian Roberts" starts with an "I".

It's definitely up for interpretation because i didn't come to that conclusion.

I could see the term "stepped on the J" quickly surpassing "jumped the shark" in its use.

So has the Brian Roberts deal been done yet?

:stickman:

Does this really have to be posted/asked/mentioned every page?

Uhh... isn't this a thread devoted to discussing a rumored Brian Roberts deal?

Don't know if it was posted, but from earlier today:

No progress on Roberts

The trade talks between the Orioles and Chicago Cubs involving All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts have not progressed and it's becoming more and more likely that Roberts will report to spring training next week as an Oriole.

"I don't see [a trade] as likely before the reporting date," said Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail. "Anything can happen. You don't ever know, but I just don't see it."

The Cubs and Orioles have been talking for months and have yet to find a package that both sides agree on.

Yeah, and if a deal were done, I don't think anyone would need to ask nolan.

This might be my favorite sub-thread in this entire thread.

There has been no progress in the Brian Roberts trade talks between the Orioles and Cubs and no deal is expected in the near future.

"I don't see [a trade] as likely before the reporting date," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "Anything can happen ... but I just don't see it." If the Orioles are holding out for Felix Pie even after picking up Adam Jones, they're likely to come away disappointed.

I am happy with Hendry on this one. He's sticking to his guns, so to speak. He knows he does not "need" Roberts, and thus will only do it for a price that won't make him (and hopefully us) vomit.

we do "need" roberts because we don't have an effective leadoff hitter. There is a reason why piniella/hendry have been pursuing roberts for so long & you've heard interest in figgins. Soriano does not have the legs he used to have & is a better middle of the order guy these days. Roberts & Fukodome fully understand a "good atbat". They work the count & get on base. This helps the entire lineup as people are on to hit in & they make the pitcher work. The entire offense is much better w/ fuko/roberts w/ derosa as the supersub. I hope this gets done before the season starts. I think mcfails familiarity w/ all things cub hurt us here. He doesn't want to be perceived as getting the short end of the deal. They have no need for Roberts though as they are not in position to compete for several years.
