I have an idea. Whenever Deuce puts up a Greene non-park adjusted stat, we just type "PETCO" in response and quote it over and over again, GEOVANY SOTO style. That should get us to 300 fairly quick. Same applies if he posts a OBP or BA stat and we just reply "OPS"

I would like to point you towards my sig.

This thread has, for better or worse, morphed into the transaction stream of consciousness thread. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, and much of the debate is pretty topical. Complaining that SS is more of a need than trading for Roberts is, indeed, topical -- as are the subsequent replies. Should the debate rage on too long, a mod/admin may split the thread (although right now that's kind of a real pain in the behind).

One thing, though, please keep the debate civil. About 10 pages ago, there was an exchange where several posters clearly crossed the line. Debate all you like, but no insults; keep it about the topic of the debate -- not about someone being stupid or whatever. 'Kay?

Brian Roberts career OPS by month:

Apr .869

May .855

June .760

July .737

Aug .710

Sept .701

The Cubs don't need help establishing themselves as contenders in the crappy NLC in the first half. They need help not humiliating themselves at the end of the season. A guy who gets progressively worse as the season goes on seems like a bad idea. In fact, you could make the argument that when they need him most, DeRosa's career OPS of .790 in Aug and .744 in September would be a significant upgrade over Roberts, who appears to be a great first half player but not much more. I'm at the point where I'm almost praying MacPhail saves Hendry from himself.

This isn't something I'd use against Roberts, but that's just me.

I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but this post reminded me of a lecture you'd get from your dad when he got home from work after you did something dumb during the day and your mom told him he had to scold you, so he did, but his heart just wasn't it. I laughed much more than I should have.

I don't know, I just don't think that's something I'd put a lot of stock into. It'd be an entirely different league, with entirely different players, and of all the reasons to not get Roberts (there are plenty, I'm not for or against him at this point), I don't think this is something I'd use as an argument against. You can't assume that the Cubs will falter late in the year just because that seems to be the norm with the team. Wins are wins regardless of what month it is. The games in April and May still count, and DeRosa's monthly career OPS's have never touched .800, let alone above .850.

The longest running rumor of the off-season isn't quite dead yet.

But team sources said Wednesday there has been no movement recently in the quest to obtain Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts.

General manager Jim Hendry declined to discuss specific players, but admitted Wednesday he's a little frustrated he wasn't able to get a deal done before the start of spring training.

"Just because when you write things up on paper, you have visions of how you would like it to be by Opening Day," he said. "But it doesn't always work out that way."

Hendry added he's content with the current makeup of the team...

I had to chuckle at Mr. Miles' article in the Herald that Hendry is frustrated with the lack of deals this offseason... no, there were some deals... you might recall a guy named Santana was moved... a guy named Renteria was moved... a virtual no name (sarcasm) Miggy Cabrera... Dan Haren... yeah, I guess it was a slow offseason. Maybe when you spend all of your time focused on one player and it does not come to fruition then it can seem that it was a slow offseason for trades. I don't dislike Hendry as much as some, but he sure seems to fall in love with certain guys. How long did he try to get Barrett for example?

We weren't involved in any of those trades. Not because of Hendry's hard on for Roberts, but because either we didn't have the players required, we didn't need them (yes, just like Roberts), or -in Santana's case- they refused to waive a NTC to come to us.

I hear ya. Let's hope that we are in the mix for a SS solution either before Opening Day or by the deadline. That is the position I would most like to see upgraded (like most).

Dead horse time, but wow, what a typical Hendry-ism. Focus on specific moves and only those moves until they can be done and nothing else. Thank God Fukudome was signed or else Jim would have been just sitting around the off season doing next to nothing.

YOU DON'T ONLY HAVE TO DEAL WITH ONE PLAYER AT A TIME AND NOTHING ELSE, JIMBO.

'K, thanks.

Okay, thanks. Like a lot of people, though, I really like the Cubs' chances of making the playoffs whether they add anyone else or not. It's winning any games in the playoffs that I'm concerned about, and a guy who projects to have an OPS in the 600s if he ever got to be on a playoff team putting one of the few guys the Cubs had who actually played well in their short playoff life last season on the bench seems less than ideal to me, especially when you consider the cost in players and money. Look at the numbers closely; it's an alarming trend any way you look at it. He'll be great until the ASB, then slowly turn into Ryan Theriot the rest of the year. Carved in stone at the top of the lineup. Whoopee.

I disagree. Just because it might prove to be the longest thread ever (and for whatever reason, posters are trying to do that), does not necessarily translate this thread into being "the best ever". If you ask me, there's too much fluff in this thread for it to be considered to be one of the best.

Yeah, probably 80-100 pages of fluff.
