This is the best thread ever...this is the only thread...it is the beginning and the end...the alpha and the omega...it is spring training and the world series....the Cubs must surely now win it all. :amen:

I disagree. Just because it might prove to be the longest thread ever (and for whatever reason, posters are trying to do that), does not necessarily translate this thread into being "the best ever". If you ask me, there's too much fluff in this thread for it to be considered to be one of the best.

It's the "fluff" and not the actual on-topic discussion that makes this one of the best.

Hmm. Interesting. I guess everybody's different. How do other posters/members feel about this?

The thread is a metaphor for the actual pursuit of Roberts. It's full of nonsense without much substance, therefore it is a perfect existential allegory. There will be none better. We haven't seen the likes of this since the famous Treebeard thread circa 2004.

Of course, coming to this thread and posting about how long it is, or how much "fluff" is in here only adds to it's length.

When the thread title gets updated I pop in to see what the fuss is. You gotta ignore the rest of the stuff here and laugh it off. Like 90% of it.

I feel we have to push this to 300 and beyond

OMG ACTUAL (SEMI) NEWS!

MESA, Ariz. - The longest running rumor of the off-season isn't quite dead yet.

But team sources said Wednesday there has been no movement recently in the quest to obtain Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts.

General manager Jim Hendry declined to discuss specific players, but admitted Wednesday he's a little frustrated he wasn't able to get a deal done before the start of spring training.

"Just because when you write things up on paper, you have visions of how you would like it to be by Opening Day," he said. "But it doesn't always work out that way."

That was sooo last page. You probably would have noticed it without all this fluff...

MESA, Ariz. - The longest running rumor of the off-season is very much alive!

Team sources said Wednesday the quest to obtain Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts is just about to be completed.

General manager Jim Hendry declined to discuss specific players, but admitted Wednesday that a deal was close.

"Just because when you write things up on paper, you have visions of how you would like it to be by Opening Day," he said. "Thats why we are so glad to be wrapping this up"

The rumored trade is Rich Hill, Felix Pie, Sammy Sosa, Ryne Sandberg and Jose Vizcaino for Brian Roberts, Billy Ripken and Bigfoot.

Apologizes, this article has been Peace'd for you.

This thread has, for better or worse, morphed into the transaction stream of consciousness thread. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, and much of the debate is pretty topical. Complaining that SS is more of a need than trading for Roberts is, indeed, topical -- as are the subsequent replies. Should the debate rage on too long, a mod/admin may split the thread (although right now that's kind of a real pain in the behind).

One thing, though, please keep the debate civil. About 10 pages ago, there was an exchange where several posters clearly crossed the line. Debate all you like, but no insults; keep it about the topic of the debate -- not about someone being stupid or whatever. 'Kay?

I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but this post reminded me of a lecture you'd get from your dad when he got home from work after you did something dumb during the day and your mom told him he had to scold you, so he did, but his heart just wasn't it. I laughed much more than I should have.

=D> It didn't; find your post quite funny.

But, in all seriousness... listen to your mother.

The day the Brian Roberts trade happens, I'm locking this thread forever. It can't be allowed to live beyond the "rumor" stage.

What if the rumors die down in Spring Training, but then heat up again at the trade deadline?

Then we'll keep it going and shoot for 500 pages.

He said he would lock if the trade happens.

What if a trade happens, but then doesn't actually happen, then it is close, then it happens again, but doesn't happen again... Will it still be locked?!?!

I'm guessing not since that has pretty much been the course of events since this thread started...

There was a fair amount of hyperbole in my earlier statement...that being said...LONG LIVE THE THREAD

It will be our responsibility (much like the Knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) to protect this thread and keep it alive so long as we live - and Brian Roberts is not yet a cub. I envision the year 2078 when our children's children are on NSBB talking about baseball on played on the moon (The Lunar Lions? The Sea of Tranquility Stars?) that even though Brian Roberts is not yet a Cub, some day he will come again and be traded to the Cubs or signed by Jim Hendry, IV.

Better yet, start a new thread about the trade so that those of us who don't want to read all of the "fluff" can read and post there. Leave this thread for the "fluffers".

Let's let the "insiders" at OH decide.
