Yes, I know, it's usually a popularity contest, but D-Lee won NL 1B. And Jeter didn't win!

Andruw Jones-OF-Braves Nov. 6 - 4:29 pm et

Andruw Jones was awarded his 10th National League Gold Glove on Tuesday.

There was a rare Gold Glove tie in the outfield, with Aaron Rowand and Jeff Francoeur both getting awards behind Jones and Carlos Beltran in the balloting. Greg Maddux won his 17th, while Orlando Hudson and Derrek Lee both earned their third. First-time winners were catcher Russell Martin, shortstop Jimmy Rollins and third baseman David Wright. Martin over Yadier Molina and Rollins over Omar Vizquel are surprises.

Orlando Cabrera-SS-Angels Nov. 6 - 4:21 pm et

Orlando Cabrera upset Derek Jeter for his first Gold Glove in the American League selections announced today.

It was the only big surprise. Winning for the 13th time was catcher Ivan Rodriguez, and outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Torii Hunter both claimed their seventh straight awards. However, there were six first-time winners. The others were first baseman Kevin Youkilis, second baseman Placido Polanco, third baseman Adrian Beltre, outfielder Grady Sizemore and pitcher Johan Santana.

I hope Aramis has improved his reputation to the point where he might have a chance at one in 2008. He's as good as anyone at 3B.

It is a complete oversight by the committee that determines the GG award that neither Aramis Ramirez or Rafael Palmeiro are 2007 recipients.

Thus, the GG award continues its dominance as the most meaningless award known to man.

WTH? Derrek Lee barely hit 22 home runs this year. How the hell did he win?

But seriously, big shocker for me

A) His defense definitely wasn't the same as years past

B) I just assumed that after Albert won the GG last year, he would take over and win for the next 6-7 years because of all the sportswriters who gush over him.

I'll be honest and say that I'm suprised D. Lee won this year. I'm really suprised it didn't goto Todd Helton who only had two errors.

Albert is lauded as by far the best defensive first baseman by those who keep track of such things.

I didn't pay much attention to him this year, but how did David Wright go from being seriously questioned at 3B by some to winning the GG in one year?

I think you can make a strong case for him being the best, but "by far"? I don't buy that.

IMO, he's marginally if any better than Lee, and no better than Helton.

But I really haven't seen a defensive metric that has me convinced at all that it can accurately quantify defensive ability, so it's all opinion and conjecture IMO.

While Lee had a down year defensively, I don't think it was due a erosion of skills. He seemed to just botch more routine plays rather than not be able to make tough ones.

If it was me, I'd have given the award to Ryan Braun. Since it appears that the guy with the most errors wins, Braun should have won it hands down.

Meanwhile, Aramis and his measily 10 errors is far too few to even be considered. Wright had more than twice as many.

There is no method to this madness. I love it how Wright goes from being questioned to playing questionable defense and wins the GG while Aramis goes from questionable defense to great defense and gets no recognition.

And I also love it how whenever an AL SS not named Jeter wins the GG it is an "upset".

Cards tanked badly. Pujols also had a down year, albeit still excellent. Since the GG is often about more than the actual defensive performance, the fact that the Cubs made the playoffs and the Cards collapsed and were gone in Sept. probably factored in.

Derrek did have 1 fewer error than Pujols (7 vs. 8), FWIW. Fielding pct. pretty much the same. I know these aren't the best stats, but I'll bet many voters look at them.

Ramirez was pretty good, but it's hardly a slight that he lost. Wright is a bit of a questionable choice though.

It doesn't seem like a slight, but when you look at the competition, it may well have been.

Regardless, you have to go to Zimmerman before Wright. I think Ramirez and Zimmerman were both better in the field.

Because he pulled an Edmonds and made routine plays seem spectacular?

(He had that barehand catch late in 2006 that needn't have been barehanded and I think he had another such play towards the end of this year.)

David Wright is much improved by all accounts. However, there is no way that he deserves the award over Feliz or Rolen. He probably wasn't as good as Ramirez either, but they both take a backseat to the obvious two.

I only saw about 5 games from Zimmerman this year, but he looks like the best defensive 3B in baseball to me right now.

I'd take Zimmerman over any of them.

UZR disagrees, but I don't know where anyone falls out of the top three (Feliz, Rolen and Ramirez). Zimmerman seems like he's fantastic at third and his true talent may well be up there. I haven't watched him play much at all, for whatever that's worth.

Players can definitely have peak (outlier, career, whatever) defensive years, and I doubt that the GG voters ever get a handle on that.

Having seen almost every 07 cardinal game, and all cub games not on comcast, I can say that Pujols is not on par with Lee defensively. Lee looked a little worse this year on routine plays, and Pujols looked all-around more comfortable on the field and has improved significantly. However, Pujols can't get to near as many balls as Lee can. I think Lee made Aram look better than he really is - and Pujols made Rolen look a little worse. My 2 cents....
