Pirates today look like they're fully into "Let's see what all 40 of these guys will be able to give us for next year" mode.

Which means they'll throw 3 pitchers at the Cubs that they've never seen, and the Cubs' offense will be completely shut down by them.

Meanwhile, the Cub pitching will be lights out, except when pitching to these opposing pitchers.

Ankiel has 8 homers already. Wow!

I just wonder if he will be able to handle the high pressure games to come, or if he will have a mental break again.

Yep. Our big 3 are the only ones who have more on the team this year.

(Barrett had 9 if you want to count him.)

What makes no sense about the Cardinals is the level of talent they have compared to how they've been playing. They only have one really good player (Pujols) on the team. Their rotation and bullpen is a mishmash of scrapheap veterans and a few young players with some upside. A lot of their position players are old and hurt. I'm not even taking stuff like Pythag Record into account, either!

They should be much farther back, by all rights. And yet...here we are.

Well, it looks like Dempster may have to get the one-run save.

How's he been in one run save situations so far this year?

No stats to back this up, but I don't think he's blown any of them.

And Rick Ankiel homers.

Is this coming as a surprise to anyone? That freaking team could sign Neifi Perez and Jose Macias and drag 100 OPS+ seasons out of both of them, complete with gold gloves.

No they couldn't, and Ankiel isn't that big of surprise because we've known all along he could hit.

He hit in the .260s in the minors. He is hititng in the .360s now.

He hit a ton of homers.

Fontenot OPSed over 1000 for a while as well. Theriot OPSed a lot over his norm last year.

It is ridiculous. Though in all fairness if the Cubs had played the way they should have to this point we wouldn't have to worry about them.

What you don't get scared of Brendan Ryan?

I think he's blown 1 (the one in Pittsburgh in May if my recollection is right that the Cubs lost in like 15 innings). Overall, he's been quite good though.

What does it mean for a hitter to have a mental break? Just start swinging at everything, missing pitches by 6 feet?

Ok, and if Ankiel comes back to his level a lot of us will shut up.

I was thinking more problems with fielding and throwing to be honest.

Have you ever played the game where you look at athletes on various teams and try figuring out which ones you could beat or match up really well against in a fight?

My friends and I have yet to find a team with as many of those players as the Cardinals. For you Blades of Glory fans, it's mind-bottling!
