I want the Cubs to make the playoffs, and I want those in charge to understand that this team is very average and that Jim Hendry has done a lousy job as general manager. If the Cubs sneak in at 85-77 or so, they should realize that, regardless of the Cubs' showing in the playoffs. If they're too inept to see all the flaws in this team, then we're probably boned no matter what happens.

that's a very good point.

I agree. I really do have a lot of faith in Lou and hopefully he'll help Hendry see the light.

If the Soriano signing is an indication, you will be sorely disappointed.

Poor timing and planning by Hendry forced him to over pay for Soriano. I like Al, not at that price, but I like the guy and he's a good player but Hendry's lack of vision has hurt this team that could have been a very good, well rounded ballclub.

Soriano's signing was terrible from the start. Leave it to the Cubs to finally show that they will pay big money for a player and have it be the absolutely worst guy to throw money at.

I guess it could be worse. At least we didn't sign JD Drew.

The Cubs fan in me says, "Yes, I want them in the playoffs even as an average team."

The baseball fan in me says, "No, the playoffs are for the 8 best teams." (The Cubs won't be in the top 8 if they make the playoffs."

I suppose as a Cardinal fan, last year was a terrific end to a pretty average season. It would be great if the Cubs could do the same, but then we'd have to live with the legacy of winning a world series with an average team that just got hot and lucky at the right time.

Damn-it, I want a great team, from beginning to end. I want a team that will kick butt throughout the regular season and dominate in the playoffs. I want a team that will have 110 wins and that everyone clearly defines as the best of the best.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to live with mediocrity.

The 1969 Cubs should've made the playoffs but didn't. The 1984 Cubs should've made the World Series, but didn't. The 2003 Cubs should've made the World Series, but didn't. You know, things don't always work out as they should. I'll gladly take a trip to the postseason, and I'll enjoy it too. Those of you who don't want them to make it, don't watch when they do. Let the rest of us fans who actually prefer our team to win enjoy the ride.

Whether the Cubs make the playoffs or not is immaterial to the new owners and their aim to the team except that the owners [hopefully] are more pointed to making the Cubs a perennial winner.

Now this year it comes down to Piniella and staff finding a way to win 10-11-12, 13 or more improbable 14 games. 10 probably gets us in a one-game playoff with Milwaukee, 11 either wins or at the outset is another playoff, 12 probably wins the division outright with a game in reserve, and 13 more likely and 14 they clinch with 3 games to spare.

Next year the Cubs have some decisions to make. First is whether getting a RF'er or force Soriano to play RF and get a LF'er. Next is to make a decision at catcher, (probably Soto and another veteran), and then CF. I think Theriot is the SS for 2 more years and DeRosa at 2B. I think Cubs go with Pie & Soto in the middle with two veterans as backup.

Cubs also need to move their payroll to $130M. I think getting a new GM is wasteful, the moves are self evident, Cubs have Marshall or Hill to trade, Murton, Jones, Blanco, Ohman, Eyre, Cedeno. I think they resign Dempster as a starter and move Marmol, Howry up with Wuertz, Wood as the main four with Shark and possibly Veal coming up with the Cubs finding a LOOGY.

The 1969 Cubs should've made the playoffs but didn't.
So should have the 2004 Cubs.

Probably the worst product of the 2003 season was the 2004 expectation. Man, that team was loaded, and I was as excited about Cubs baseball as I had ever been.

I had never been more excited for a baseball season than 2004, and quite frankly, save the last week, I had never seen a better Cubs team than 2004. Granted I'm not that old (20), but still. That team was stacked. It's hard for me to even comprehend what we were throwing out there...

C Barrett

1B Lee

2B Walker

SS Garciaparra

3B Ramirez

LF Alou

CF Patterson

RF Sosa

That's above average production at every single position.

And nothing needs to be said about the starting staff.

Yeah, Spring Training of 04 was probably the peak of my excitement and expectation levels. When we snagged Nomar I had visions of the Cubs winning the first round of the playoffs in 3 blowouts. I think that's why 05 and 06 stung so bad.

This year, I want us to make the playoffs pretty badly. Yes we may get blown away. However, the offense (as poorly assembled as it is) has vastly underachieved. If Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Derosa, and Floyd (yes it's a stretch) get moderately hot and maintain it through the playoffs, we could really do some damage. Lilly has shown he can put up a quality start against pretty much anybody and Z/Hill always have the capability to shut teams down.

Beyond anything else, if we make the playoffs this year it means that nobody else from the central did. We are still a crap team, but at least then we'd be kings of crap. Kings of crap > middle crap. I'd rather be bottom crap than middle crap, at least we'd get a good pick.

What an assenine comment. If you've read this thread you'd know that the whole argument for wanting the cubs to miss the playoffs is because fans would like to be able to point to more than 3 out of the last 40 seasons as seasons we had a chance.

The word you're looking for is asinine.

What's "assenine" is your logic. People don't want the Cubs to make the playoffs because we've been lousy in the past? That's just flat out stupid.

No real fan would ever want the team they supposedly support to not make the playoffs.

It's been awhile since I've read the whole thread. I was responding to nilo's comment; where was I off in that? Did you have anything to contribute, or were you just curious as to what percentage of the thread I've read?
