He's been discussed but we need a thread on him specifically... anyone else think he'd be a solid option?

And here's a little tidbit from the Daily Herald:

Depending on whom you believe, Williams is on the verge of trading Dye to the Los Angeles Angels. Or the Cubs. Or the Cleveland Indians. He’s going to trade Contreras to the New York Mets and get shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves for Garland.

IF this season is a fluke, and hes not regressing, he could help this team.

I'm all for Dye in RF. I know his overall numbers look bad but I think he would be an upgrade over Floyd.

He's hitting .333 with a OBP of .412 since the break.

Supposedly Williams is expecting an elite prospect for him...So who would you be willing to give up?

I'm not giving up any "elite" prospects for a half-season rental. Williams will need to lower his bar. However, I would consider EPatt if they're willing to take Jones. Then bring up Pie and sit him in the 8 spot.

would dye be a rental? If Jones is gotten rid of (if JH is determined), and Murton is traded (perhaps for Dye?), wouldn't the Cubs make a good run at bringing him back?

of course, that all depends (or should, at least) on whether Murton is around next spring.

I think he would be a rental. Despite his age and his terrible first half, if the market is anything like last years, if he has a solid second half to go along with the 40 HR season last year, teams will be lining up to sign him.

I think he's just speaking in terms of the contract. He's a rental unless we re-signed him, but during trade negotiations I'm sure any team would put the fact that his contract is up on the table.

Good Lord, Dye is precisely what I think we need. Would the White Sox really help us out like that?

Dye's another one with a strange career path. He was on the verge of stardom in 2000, then plateaued with some rather unimpressive efforts for the next 4 seasons. He took a step forward in 2005 and was tremendous in 2006, but now he's crap. As he enters his mid 30's, you might be looking at a guy who is going to give you similar numbers to his career average line of .274/.337/.483, or an OPS+ a bit above 100, but heavily weighted with SLG instead of OBP, so really, somebody that's not all that much better than average. Of course he could, at any time, rattle off a 125 OPS+ type of season. He probably could help the 2007 Cubs quite a bit, I just wouldn't be the least bit interested in signing him to a big longterm contract.

Jake Fox and maybe a lower level pitching prospect. Maximum. Dye could be great...or he could get hurt and we'd never hear from him again. Likely he will put up his average 2001-2004 numbers, which aren't bad, but the risk is very high with him.

I can understand why Williams is asking for the moon, however. Dye could end up being a Type A free agent and if the club acquiring him might get a few nice draft picks out of him.

Considering he's an inconsistent hitter who is a bit weak in the OBP department and he plays the one position among the 4 needs spots that the Cubs actually could get decent production out of already, I don't see how he's precisely what we need. A productive SS is precisely what we need. A solid catcher would help more. Dye isn't really a guaranteed step up from Floyd. He should help, but not a ton.

He should only be a rental. Williams will always ask for too much, but I'm wondering if at some point this season that Reinsdorf or someone doesn't squeeze Williams to make a deal and get something for these "walk" players on the White Sox.

Hmmmm, really? Dye will play, Floyd I'm guessing will be touch-and-go the rest of the season. We'll likely be looking at DeRo in RF many games, with a subsequent non-power hitter filling his spot in the lineup @ 2B.

I do think Dye is exactly the kind of power bat that could make our lineup more dangerous on a more consistent basis down the stretch. I'm sure Grif would be better but I don't know if Cincy would be willing to help us out in-division like that.

How about Murton and Mateo for Dye? Too much to little? I know people are in love with Murton but I just don't see him getting a far shot with the cubbies

I think that any trade for a RF would - and should - include Murton. I just don't see the kid ever getting a fair shake with the Cubs, and if we're going to upgrade RF to make a run in the next 1-2 years we should try and get something for Matt while we can. Last season's performance will still resonate with many organizations, and if we wait too much longer he'll be a 26-year old AAA player who won't be worth as much.

I think draft pick compensation was ended in the latest CBA.

The requirements were made tougher for each class of FA's in the latest CBA, but draft pick compensation is still there.

LOL...Mateo is trash.

Wow, you can't possibly be serious. He looked very good at times during his callup last year.

You consider a 5+ ERA and a 1.62 WHIP very good?

Re-read my bolded words. And in any case, Marshall, Hill, and Marmol are all good examples of how a player's initial stint in the majors isn't necessarily indicative of how good they can become. Greg Maddux is an even better example.
