Will Carroll says we would be the most likely suitor for Dye as we could offer a reliver and a prospect, but (gulp) we have to see if we can take on 2.5 freakin' million on his contract.

If that's the case, then they better not expect a high-level prospect.

No, 2.5 million isn't much at all, it's just that i'm a little irked that we even have to consider 2.5 million is too much.

I think that's simply speculation. I seriously doubt Jimbo wouldn't be allowed to take on 2.5 million.

Dye may move across town

Could Jermaine Dye go from one side of Chicago to the other? It's certainly possible.

Chicago Cubs' GM Jim Hendry said he'd have no problem making a deal for the Chicago White Sox outfielder. Hendry and Sox general manager Kenny Williams are on good terms.

Tampering rules prevent Hendry from discussing specific players, but there is speculation that the Cubs were looking at Dye.

Daily Southtown

Do Cubs have an eye on Dye?

ST. LOUIS -- Are the Cubs looking for a Dye job?

General manager Jim Hendry said he'd have no problem making a deal with the White Sox before Tuesday's non-waiver trading deadline if a trade made sense. He and Sox general manager Kenny Williams are on good terms, and they completed a trade in the offseason, the Sox sending Neal Cotts to the Cubs for David Aardsma in a swap of relievers.

Tampering rules prevent Hendry from discussing specific players, but the Daily Herald has speculated the Cubs were looking at Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye.

"Kenny and I have always had good dialogue," Hendry said, "and I don't think there would be any way he would shy away from us if he felt he could help his club."

Hendry said he would like to do some "tinkering" with the roster and that he's looking for a hitter for the bench.

The Cubs have made three significant deals in the past five weeks, sending catcher Michael Barrett to San Diego on June 20, and acquiring catcher Jason Kendall from Oakland and trading shortstop Cesar Izturis to Pittsburgh last week.

Rumors also say the Cubs are interested in acquiring Zack Greinke or Octavio Dotel -- both pitchers -- from Kansas City. Hendry doesn't think the team needs pitching help, but that could change in the next few days.

Pass. He's not that much of an upgrade over Floyd and not worth giving up a prospect for a 3-month rental. I'd rather see Murton brought back up.

HUH?

i like dye. a lot. he has been a major contributor on winning teams in the past, and while i know that means little to most here, if it comes down to a player that has or has not won multiple world series', i go with experience.

Dye has won multiple WS?

Dye has an OPS+ of 88 this year, Floyd has a 93. Neither is doing any good.

He's certainly no Derek Jeter. Dye only has one ring, from 2005. Come think of it, Floyd also has one ring, from 1997. Like I said, it's a wash, and Dye's not worth a good prospect for a half-season rental.

dye was, iirc, with atlanta when they were winners (jerome walton was on the '96 braves, lol, which lost to new york 4-2), was with oakland during their playoff runs, and obviously with the white sox in 05 as you mentioned.

and Dye is not going to be a substitution. i would imagine a platoon.

Dye vs Lefties this year: .261/.337/.500

Floyd vs Lefties ty: .278/.350/.333 (only 18 ab's, and the slg is worse than his obp...)

Dye vs Righties: .217/.270/.420

Floyd vs Righties: .288/ .356/ .394

Floyd's slugging is really bad. However, if Dye was brought on and used correctly, we would see much greater production out of right field.

What's your other option, Jeff Conine? Matt Stairs? Don't get me wrong, I like Stairs, but as the outfield equivelant of Ward and nothing more.

I don't see how that could be a bad trade at all. First off, the Cubs are never gonna really utiize Murton correctly, and I really don't see Mateo providing any value to this rotation. A lineup with Dye in RF could easly power this team deep into the playoffs. I would gladly make that sacrifice.

because Dye is not better than Murton right now, and it's not likely that he's going to get better

and then you want to add another player

Yeah, I'd rather have Murton over Dye mostly based on contracts, but the Cubs would also be getting two draft picks once Dye leaves.

If Dye could help us this year, and we get two draft picks, I'd gladly trade Murton. And this is from a Murton fan.

Len hinting at the Dye rumors in his recent blog:

I think the Cubs would like to see Cliff Floyd really get going at the plate. He's more than capable, when he gets hot, of carrying a team, but it's been difficult to keep him in the lineup regularly because of a plethora of minor, bothersome injuries. Matt Murton is waiting in the wings @ AAA if needed, but if there's a big bat in RF available on the trade market, it looks like Hendry will at least consider it. I'm sure we can all think of one on the South Side of town who isn't signed past this season.
