It was in the press conference, earlier today, for anyone that didn't catch it. It took me a bit off guard. No reason? Really? Am I a bit crazy here? His numbers look decent at this point, but can Lou really push TLR to get Z on the roster? I know they're friends, but come on.

I dont think TLR is the one that will decide who will get on the roster.

He will however, decide how many innings Z will pitch... which will likely be 1.

But if Lou really is trying to hold back on starters so they're fresh later on, he might suggest skipping ASG for Cubs pitchers. Just a thought.

4.20 ERA.

That's why he shouldn't be an All-Star.

Sorry Lou, I appreciate your campaigning for the Cubbies, but Zambrano doesn't deserve this at all. He's had one great month and two ridiculously bad months.

Zambrano wants to be picked for the National League All-Star squad and hopes Piniella and pitching coach Larry Rothschild will rearrange the rotation to enhance his prospects.

"I want to go, and I'm available," Zambrano said.

He's on schedule to pitch the final game of the first half, which would leave Zambrano unable to participate in the July 10 All-Star Game in San Francisco. But Thursday's off day could allow the Cubs to move Zambrano up a day, and Piniella is likely to accede to his wishes.

By all means, the Cubs should rearrange the rotation around the possibility of Z going to the All-Star game. Feeding Z's ego really should be their top priority right now.

Especially since it's not like he's destined to go to the AS game and get walloped on his pitching elbow with a fungo bat.

Screw that attitude. Way to have your priorities, Z.

And yeah, Rich Hill is the only Cub pitcher deserving to go.

I agree that he shouldn't go, but he is likely to be the NL's best pitcher going into the break. He is right now.

Actually, wouldn't that be Jake Peavy?

FWIW, Carlos Zambrano had a 103 ERA+ coming into his most recent game.

So, he's battled back to slightly above average. Very good work considering how horrid he was in April & May, but still not all-star calibre, IMO.

Yeah, I think Lou's just wrong here. There are definitely reasons why Z shouldn't be an all-star.

Why shouldnt Z be in the All Star Game? He didnt make it last season, but his numbers for this season have been Cy Young like...

I have an idea. Let's mess with a good thing (the incredible ROLL Z is on) and screw with that by messing around with his # of days of rest JUST so he can get on the all-star team. Yeah. . . that's a good idea.

They wouldn't be messing with Z's days of rest-they would be using the off game today to move him up one day and pitch on normal rest instead of one extra day.

With that said, I hope they don't. I think Z should pitch the last game before the break, and then he can pitch again the first game after the break. With the way the Cubs are going right now, it would really be nice to have two Z games in a row, and it would be normal rest for Z.

Plus, he's just 9-6 and has a pedestrian ERA of 4.20. We should be using this opportunity to do as you say: have Z provide an extra boost for the Cubs. Not an extra boost for his ego.

Wins are sexy and Z has nine of them. That's about the only way to justify it.

Losses aren't sexy and Z has six of them.

But that's part of the problem with judging pitchers on wins. People don't do the same on losses. A 20 game winner who lost 12, still has bigger cache than a 18 game winner who lost 5. Go 12-6 and it's impressive, but not nearly as impressive as winning 15 (even if you lose 15).

If your the manager of the NL though you could change things up a little. The AL has won 9 of 10 with the other one being a tie. Being that the game actually means something in terms of home field advantage, Larussa could take his best pitchers right now to give the NL the best chance to win.
