I have an idea. Let's mess with a good thing (the incredible ROLL Z is on) and screw with that by messing around with his # of days of rest JUST so he can get on the all-star team. Yeah. . . that's a good idea.

They wouldn't be messing with Z's days of rest-they would be using the off game today to move him up one day and pitch on normal rest instead of one extra day.

With that said, I hope they don't. I think Z should pitch the last game before the break, and then he can pitch again the first game after the break. With the way the Cubs are going right now, it would really be nice to have two Z games in a row, and it would be normal rest for Z.

I hate 4 day all star breaks.

I hope Zambrano doesn't make it so he'll feel slighted and disrespected and possibly pitch with something to prove in the second half.

That, in addition to the fact that it's his contract year, should hopefully motivate him to be lights-out in the second half. Hopefully.

FWIW, Carlos Zambrano had a 103 ERA+ coming into his most recent game.

and hill has a 140 era+.

hill's gonna get screwed by the cubs' offense.

Carlos Marmol?

of course he won't make it, but let's do a quick comparison, shall we?

Marmol = ERA:1.29, WHIP:1.05, K/9:10.38, K/BB:3.625/1

Frans. Rodriguez= ERA:2.43, WHIP:1.17, K/9:13.36, K/BB:3.5/1

Papelbon = ERA:1.55, WHIP:0.86, K/9:12.41, K/BB:4/1

F. Cordero = ERA:2.16, WHIP:0.99, K/9:12.81, K/BB:3.92/1

...

i could go on forever here, and he's only going to get better as i pair him up against the non-elite closers of baseball like al reyes or kevin gregg. however, this probably shows that marmol is nearly as good as any other reliever (save k per 9, perhaps) in baseball.

If you believe the All-Star game is intended to reward players who have performed the best over an 80 game sample (this is the kind of thinking that leads to Cesar Izturis being named an All-Star), then of course Zambrano doesn't belong. On the other hand, if you believe that the all-star selection process should be based in part on the first 80 games and in part on career performance, one could make a very good case that Zambrano should be on the team.

Not really. You might want to give Carlos the chance to throw more than 20 innings before you make a statement like that.

i understand it's a small sample size, but he is keeping up, and i think he has the ability to keep it up. iirc, marmol has 22 innings and k-rod has 30-something. not that big of a difference (though you will say k-rod has done it for a while and marmol has not, to which i have no rebuttal).

Why shouldnt Z be in the All Star Game? He didnt make it last season, but his numbers for this season have been Cy Young like...

He made the all-star team last year. Although he wasn't there for the game because he had to be taken to the hospital when Joey Cora accidentally hit him in the are with a bat during warmups.

If you go with the best first half of the season approach, Zambrano is not an All-Star this year. His "first season" can't be ignored...Zambrano is currently 33rd in the NL in VORP at 14.8. The trio of Rich Hill (13th in NL, 24.9), Ted Lilly (28th , 15.9), and Sean Marshall (32nd, 15.0) are better by this metric on his own team. Via SNLVAR, another marker of a pitcher's value, Z is 23rd in the NL and trails Rich Hill (15th NL) of his own team.

If any Cub pitcher is an All-Star this year it is Rich Hill.

I knew there would be somebody who didnt get it. I was referring to Z's "new opening day" after the first 2 months of the season. lol

So, he's battled back to slightly above average. Very good work considering how horrid he was in April & May, but still not all-star calibre, IMO.

Yeah, I think Lou's just wrong here. There are definitely reasons why Z shouldn't be an all-star.

FWIW, I wasn't expecting that stat to prove that he should be in the All-Star game. Quite the opposite.

I'd let him go just to see him in the home run derby

thats the best idea i have heard....i would love to see that, but as for him pitching in the all star game...rich hill is the only one who really deserves it on the cubs staff, only cuz he has been up all year where marshall hasn't
