I don't see Konerko being moved with his contract. I do see Dye, Iguchi and possibly Vazquez being moved. I think Crede is done for the year or else he could have been moved.

Personally, they'd be better off keeping Who? and trying to deal Konekro, Crede, Dye, Podsednik, Iguchi...basically their whole offense needs to be replaced. Who? and Garland are still young enough to stick around for a 2 year rebuild.

So, I can't fault Williams there. This seems like a sound decision.

I was under the impression that Williams is inclined to keep Konerko. Dye needs to go for sure. I guess I am just not sure how much he'll get out of the others, and thought Buehrle was his best negotiating piece.

If Dye proves that he is healthy enough to handle RF, I would not mind Hendry going out and trading for him. He and Floyd would make a very solid platoon in RF.

I had thought that myself, but I am not remotely convinced last season wasn't a fluke. I might still do it, but only if the Sox pick up most of his remaining money, and I wouldn't give up much in the way of talent.

Or maybe trade Jones for him straight up, but I think Kenny would want more than that.

I actually like this deal on many levels. First as said he is not going to the Cards, Brewers or Mets. Secondly he wont be going to the Cards next year either. Lastly it may start to level what Starting pitchers are going to be paid this upcoming offseason. Hopefully Big Z can be had for less than I was expecting. I am not saying as low as Buerhle but maybe not as high as Zito.

If I were the White Sox, I would have traded him. Buehrle has shown to be inconsistent in the past, and he was by far the most sought after name on the trading block. Teams were likely setting up to bid on him with the White Sox getting to choose the highest bidder. The Sox aren't going anywhere anyways...doesn't make sense why they didn't trade him and get a boatload of talent in return.

Inconsistent? I think he's one of the more consistent pitchers in all of baseball.

He's had six straight years of pitching 200 or more innings and, except for last year, had an ERA between 3.12 and 4.17 in all of those years.

I could be wrong, but I think you guys are talking different types of consistency. Buehrle is pretty consistently around the same numbers each year, but(and this is what I think UMFan meant), he's more prone to variations during the year. Simply put, Buehre may end up with similar numbers to say, Tim Hudson, but he's more likely to have a disaster start and get rocked on a given start.

Almost every Cardinals fan I know was in the pre-gloating stage of acquiring Buerhle. They were convinced he's sign with this offseason at a significant favorite team discount. What a shame.

Exactly. But I must say when hes spotting his pitches, hes pretty dominant. Still, the Sox have a lot of young pitching talent come up. Buehrle was likely going to command a ridiculous haul from a team in need of pitching this summer. I would think the Sox would rather have that...but they don't look like they are too willing to accept their rebuilding mode.

Wow. I'm definitely surprised about this one. I figured he was gone for sure (assuming the deal gets finalized). That being said, I'm definitely happy because it keeps him out of the NL Central where I figured he would end up.

The score is wrong again- 2 breaking stories in 2 days, both wrong.

"Jeff Berry, the agent for Mark Buehrle, said in a telephone interview Wednesday afternoon that he was surprised by a published report that stated the team had resumed negotiations with the White Sox's left-handed ace and that a deal could be finalized by the end of the week.

"Nothing's going on," said Berry, who did acknowledge he was in the Tampa area. "Despite what's been [published].

"I'm not sure where those reports are coming from."

Berry said he hasn't spoken recently to Sox general manager Kenny Williams and said his client's status remains the same since the end of spring training -- in which any negotiations won't resume until after the season, when Buehrle becomes a free agent."

That deal would make little sense for the Sox, IMO. Granted, you get him at a discount, but you're ruining the chance of getting any productive offense via trade this year if you lock Buerhle up, and offense is what that team needs, not pitching.

I don't care if your record is 0-100 and you're scoring a half a run a game, you don't trade a talent like Buehrle for the mediocre value the Sox could've received in trade if Buehrle's willing to extend at such a discount rate.

Now if no such extension is possible, then absolutely deal him off and get whatever you can.

But let's not make believe that the Sox could've fixed their offense with what Buehrle could've netted them.

If you want to trade pitching for hitting, then send off another starter like Garland or Vasquez. They'd possibly have more value than Buehrle (sans extension) anyway, since they're not rentals.

I'm not sure who he is but The Score is reporting that he and the Sox have agreed, in principle, to a 4 years/$50MM deal.

Buehrle would be crazy to sign for $50 million. Unless something horrible happens in the second half, he is probably going to get offers in the $75-$80 million range.
