Our offense just got worse. Unless Hendry is bringing in a RF or SS, I don't understand this trade.

I hate black and white response options to polls.

Why you gotta make it a race issue?!

Too many factors involved in a trade to vote 100% yes or no. That being said, I voted yes.

Not a fan of the idea of trading Barrett now, especially when he could bring his trade value up. I figured he'd walk at the end of the year so I don't mind trading him. I like what they got, though.

i would've liked to have seen a slightly better prospect. His limited #s are not impressive. But I don't know anything about him, so maybe his #s don't tell the story. Edited by snoodmonger

Terrible trade. It just makes the team worse without adding any future value. I doubt Hendry had any more moves hinging on this trade, any more trades the club makes will be unrelated and equally nauseating.

My vote for no just evened it up. We could've done much better. Bowen is not an outstanding hitter, but is above average defensively. Geovany Soto is hitting wel in AAA and is a above average defesnsive catcher according to various reports. Could've just swapped Barrett for a reliever we could've used and brought up Soto and be done with it

It definitely adds future value. Assuming we would've gotten the draft pick for losing Barrett, it would've come in a similar spot to where Burke was taken just last year. Then we have control of Bowen for 3 more years after this year too.

The question is really whether Bowen/Hill/Soto can be as good as Barrett for the remainder of the year. If they can, it's definitely a good trade considering we have Bowen beyond this year. If they don't, then it's personal preference how much the added asset beyond this year is worth the decline in production for the remainder of this year to determine how good/bad the deal is.

That's a good point. I don't like it because I thought we could've gotten more for Barrett. But if Bowen turns out to help our pitching staff tenfold, then it seems okay. For now, I don't like it, we'll have to see how it pans out

Barrett joined the Cubs in 2004. In the 3.5 years he's been with the Cubs, they've allowed 1622 earned runs in the 3426 innings that he's caught. In the 1455 innings that someone else caught, they've allowed 699 earned runs.

So, with Barrett catching, Cubs pitchers have a 4.26 ERA.

With someone else catching, Cubs pitchers have a 4.32 ERA

GAH! CERA is a meaningless stat! If the pitching staff improves tenfold after this trade, it will not be because of Barrett.

I still disagree that this trade makes a significant improvment to future value. We are talking about a guy struggling in low A ball with a high probability of flaming out and a backup catcher. What kind of future value is that? We could have gotten someone to give us production similar enough to Bowen's without trading Barrett. The difference between one backup catcher and another is not significant enough to trade a starting player for an upgrade at that position.

I'm going to miss Barrett, but Rob Bowen may just be the next one in terms of catching on late and turning into a solid offensive catcher. He's OPSing nearly .900 away from Petco.

I like this deal.
