Trading Marshall for Griffey is absurd.

Marshall has proven he can be a solid 4-5 pitcher. At the moment, he's pitching like a 1-2. We don't have anybody that could even keep us in a game every 5 days, let alone pitch at the level Marshall has done since he was called up. He was rock solid for us the first part of last year, and it's possible that when he started the downhill slide it was due to the injury or dead arm. I think our rotation now is very serviceable, and if we want any shot of contending for the remainder of the season we're gonna need quality starts from our 5th starter as well - something Miller or Cotts are uncapable of providing.

Griffey's bat would look great in our lineup, but it's almost a guarantee that he'd have a season ending injury the moment he put on a Cubs uniform. Now, if you're talking about unloading Jockstrap + misc., I'd do it in a heartbeat. But, do we REALLY need another outfielder?

With Griffey's injury history and the Cubs luck, he definitely will dislocate something on the first ball hit to right field.
Nah, he'd never last that long. He'd trip getting off the plane at O'Hare and break his ankle.

Just keep Floyd in RF for now.

Exactly.

I might think twice about it if the Reds would take Izturis and Jones with Marshall, and give us Griffey and Homer Bailey, Mike Gosling, Carlos Fisher or Sam LeCure.

Can't keep giving our pitching prospects away (Juan Pierre?).

I like the thought of platooning Griffey and Floyd because then that reduces the risk of both of them getting hurt, but i would not give up marshall for this....if you can keep the rotation together and get griffey i'm all for it

I wouldn't give up what it would take to get Griffey just to put him in a platoon with Floyd.

What I don't understand is why the Cubs are interested in Griffey at all. At this point in his career, he's not much more than an more expensive version of Floyd, and he's another left handed OF when we have 2 that play that position already.

Haven't we learned our lesson about trading good young players for old players who used to be good but can't stay healthy anymore.

Griffey has 18 home runs. He's not an expensive version of Floyd.

Well, OK, it was hyperbole, but he's got an injury history that looks almost as bad as Wood's and Prior's, and he's 38. You'd be gambling that he is good enough to help you get into the postseason this year and if he wasn't, you'd have given up Marshall for basically nothing. He's also making 12.5M next year so if you didn't get the Reds to take on Jones at least, the payroll implications would be bad.

I was listening to Sporting News radio early this morning, and the guy hosting said that the Cubs were interested in Junior and that the Reds were weighing their options for trading him within the division. He also said that any deal would start with Sean Marshall and go from there. He cited no source for such a rumor. Anybody else heard anything along this line?

I find it hard to believe, but if true this sounds like a disaster in the making. With Griffey's injury history and the Cubs luck, he definitely will dislocate something on the first ball hit to right field.

My guess is that this host heard a rumor about Griffey going to Chicago, and he mistaken assumed the Cubs, and made up the rest himself. I've heard plenty about him going to the Sox, and zilch about the Cubs. I'm certainly willing to be proven wrong, but I really think we'll see Hendry go more for a Tejada than a Griffey.

I hope you're right.

The White Sox have pretty much eliminated themselves from the "buyers" category. They will be dumping players, not adding them.

I think the same should be said about the Cubs.

The White Sox are 10.5 games out with 3 teams to climb over, the Cubs are 6.5 with 1 team ahead of them. The White Sox are in a free fall and have a worse record than the Cubs while playing in a tougher league and division, and have an expected w-l that suggests things could get even worse. The Cubs are treading water in a winnable division and have an expected w-l record that suggests they could be a bit better than the record. I don't think they are in the same boat.

Marshall has too much potential to give up in this deal, even if it meant moving Jones. Another pitching prospect maybe. Griffey has an injury history, but his bat would make the lineup formidable with him hitting between Lee and Ramirez.

I'd consider giving up Guzman, but not Marshall.

Why would they want a guy with elbow problems?

Krivsky is not a very smart GM.
