Anyway, that theory certainly worked wonders for Barrett, who has not 1 but 2 promotional nights coming up. Oops. :)
I think Griffey has slightly more clout with the Reds than Barrett had with the Cubs. :D

Whether it's Griffey or someone else, the Cubs have to get another solid bat in the lineup. Floyd isn't an everyday player and Fotenot has been hot, but a lineup that includes Theriot/Izturis, Bowen/Hill, Jones/Pagan, and Pie along with a pitcher isn't going to scare many other teams.

An offensive upgrade to either RF or SS would significantly improve this team. An upgrade to both would be great, but I'm not holding my breath. I suspect RF would be easier to upgrade (cost and available players) over SS.

TOTAL SPECULATION ALERT!!!

I wonder if Griffey asked the Reds to hold off on a trade to the Cubs until after his series with Seattle. With all the festivities planned, it might be something he'd request. And with the Reds knowing they're already playing for next year and not this year, they might be willing to accomodate Griffey and hold off until after the series with the Mariners is over.

Just a little speculation to keep the hopes of getting Ken Griffey Jr.

That's already been mentioned in this thread, and for Premium users, it's at the top of this page (page 8).

Sorry, a bit too lazy to grind my way though the previous nine pages of posts.

As I mentioned earlier, Stark was on ESPN and said there is nothing to all of this. Mentions what many have speculated that the Cubs are in no position to take on any extra salary right now.

Lets forget about it..

The rumor was also in regards to Griffey wanting to go to the Cubs, it had nothing to do with the Cubs being interested.

If the Cubs traded for Jr., wouldn't they be on the hook for all the deferred money on his contract? Doesn't that come out to something insane like 50M+?

I agree. Those guys are always right.

Remember when we got all worked up over Nomar and then Peter Gammons came on and said, right before the trade deadline, that there was absolutely no chance Nomar became a cub? ESPN was right then, and they are right now.

Oh wait...

I don't know why Griffey would approve a trade to a team that is 8.5 games out of first.

To play for Lou Piniella, who managed him in Seattle.

To have a chance--albeit and outside one--to go to the playoffs.

Are we assuming that no clubs who are closer to contention than the Cubs have put in a bid?

I love the pervading attitude that all of the writers don't know crap, especially if they work for ESPN. I've always found Stark to be pretty good, I'm sure he has researched this and has better sources than a message board.

I'm just reporting what the man said. I never claimed they were infallible, but maybe they just might know what they are talking about.

I've always enjoyed reading Stark as well.

Personally, I believe the "Cubs can't take on salary" part of this thread more than anything else.

Jimbo should start the proceedings with an offer of Howry and Jones for Dunn

If they insist on Marshall, they can have him, but only if they take back at least two of Jones, Eyre, and Izturis. They can have Howry and even some $ if they take all three of J/E/I.

Keep the Gooz if possible

Someone will have to explain to me sometime what is so special about the ever-injured Guzman. He's Prior/Wood without the major league success.

Just curious why we need Dunn and where exactly would he play?

He may never be Kent Mercker, but it's not like he's God or anything.
