I was listening to Sporting News radio early this morning, and the guy hosting said that the Cubs were interested in Junior and that the Reds were weighing their options for trading him within the division. He also said that any deal would start with Sean Marshall and go from there. He cited no source for such a rumor. Anybody else heard anything along this line?

I find it hard to believe, but if true this sounds like a disaster in the making. With Griffey's injury history and the Cubs luck, he definitely will dislocate something on the first ball hit to right field.

Not to mention that he's old and we already have about 34 outfielders. I've heard rumors about Jr. going to the sox, but not the northside.

Wierd.

The Cubs could use his bat in their lineup. I would be willing to gamble on Griffey.

Me too, but what are we talking about giving up here? The Reds desperately need pitching. So Marshall plus what?

I like Sean Marshall... but I like Griffey more. Yeah, he's an injury risk, but when he's not injured he's still one of the best offensive forces in the game.

Soriano, Lee, Griffey, and Ramirez would be ridiculous, and complement it with Theriot, Fontenot, Pie, and Barrett (if he isn't traded) would be really impressive

Wow, Junior is having a great year. I'd love to have his bat in our lineup.

What's the rest of his contract look like?

I'm not sure. It looks like he has one more year on his deal after this one, plus a club option for 2009, but I'm not sure what the money looks like for those years.

$12.5 mil through '08, $16.5 mil club option in '09 ($4 mil buyout). So he'd be roughly $18 mil through '08 it seems.

Hm, sounds like the perfect solution. Throw him in between Lee and Ramirez, give him an off day more often than most player to keep him healthy.

I thought for sure I saw somewhere that Griffey's contract was deferred and that he'd be getting paid yearly all the way through 2024.

Oh yeah, I'm [expletive], didn't bother reading beyond the yearly amounts, haha...

# $57.5M in salary deferred at 4% interest, to be paid 2009-2024, reducing contract's present-day value at time of signing to between $9.2M and $9.3M annually, according to Reds management sources

* $5.5M of 2000 salary deferred

* $6.5M/year of 2001-2008 salaries deferred

So essentially, Griffey at $6mil?? I'd do that. Marshall and Jones, kick in a minor league pitcher if needed. Don't know who'd they'd want or need past Marshall.

Edit: I realize the other 6.5 mil would come later, but that could get figured in easier to a future salary structure.

Yikes, I don't know if I like that deal at all.

Griffey has declining skills and a body more fragile than Nomar.

Count me out.

Only if the Reds take Jones and one of our bad reliever contracts, all of the contract, would I do this deal. Even then, I wouldn't give them more than Murton or Guzman as a prospect. I wouldn't give them Marshall. We'd be doing them a favor by taking Griffey off their hands. No way do you trade a young pitcher doing as well as Marshall is for an aging outfielder.

Marshall is pitching very well and isn't even 25 yet. He's got almost 30 starts under his belt at the big league level...

I'd like Griffey, but I'm not sure about giving up Marshall in the division.

Posted
I don't know about Griff, but I think we should see how much value Marshall has. He's been pitching out of his mind and, while I like him, isn't as good as his numbers show. If some team thinks he's a top of the line pitching prospect and we can get a real impact bat, i'd be hesitant, but i'd sell high.

giving away marshall leaves us with what?

not a good looking picture...who is going to be the 5th starter...marmol?

cotts? bleh

if marshall is to be traded...it should be a deal to aquire some good young talent...not an old bat that will come to a team with about a 12.5% chance of making the playoffs this year...

that is a waste IMO

Put me in the pro Marshall camp. I would love to acquire Griffey but not at the expense of Marshall. Hell I wouldn't do a Marshall for Griffey deal straight up. And the rumor says Marshall to start...No thanks. Now if we want to start with Guzman and add Jones as someone else mentioned...Sign me up.

I'm guessing Kyle Lohse

Color me uninterested. I'm all for selling high on Marshall, but he's still going to be a decent and reliable starter, so I'd like to get something a bit more long term for him.

What is Griffeys contract status? If he is signed past this season it would be a major mistake for the Cubs to take on his contract

edit: sorry I went back and read page 1. bad mistake to take on his salary and give up a young pitcher making the minimum. Unless we are going to have a $150 million payroll
