Well...Glavine will retire eventually. Pedro is a half-season pitcher now. Your corner OF's are old. Your 1B and C are older. Your window to win a Worls Series is probably this year and next.

As long as they have Beltran, Reyes and Wright, to go along with a $100+ million payroll, their window will stay open. They could use some starting pitching help, with the old guys possibly on their last legs. But Rick Peterson has done an outstanding job of getting the most out of their young arms, like Maine and Perez.

Good pitching prospects hardly ever get moved any more. If Z is going to be dealt, we need good, young pitching coming back our way. Otherwise we get to wait for the guys in our pipeline to develop.

I love that Juan Pierre trade, btw.

Martinez and either Milledge or Gomez would be fine, too.

Then, Milledge/Gomez to the braves for Yunel Escobar.

As long as we're dreaming...

John Maine would have to be part of any Zambrano deal to the Mets, IMO.

How in the world does that make sense?

Milledge and Pelfrey, then use Milledge or Pie as part of a deal to get Teixeira.

I don't like that trade if it involves our best young player, even if it is for monster OPS-guy Tex. Something else for Tex would suit me just fine, but what position will he play?

Tex has played some outfield in his career, though I can't imagine he'd be too happy about the idea of switching.

Yes, I would only want Milledge if he were to be spun off to another team. This guy is WAY too similar to CPatt for my taste. No thank you.

Martinez is intriguing.

We should be after major league ready middle infield prospects and high ceiling pitching prospects, imo.

I would love to see Z traded to Arizona. There's a pretty good prospect down there I hear.

New York Post - According to one MLB team executive, the Mets would be "heavily involved" if the Cubs look to trade Carlos Zambrano.

The 26-year-old righty is set to be a free agent after the season, and the Cubs could potentially deal him prior to the July 31 deadline.

Zambrano, who got into a fight with Cubs catcher Michael Barrett last week, is 5-5 with a 5.62 ERA in 12 games this year for the Cubs. Last year he was 16-7 with a 3.41 ERA and 210 strikeouts. He threw over 200 innings in each of the last four years.

Would the Mets really be stupid enough to tie up in excess of 30M per year for several years on two starting pitchers? We can see how well Zito has worked out so far.

i know this is a stupid question, but I'm optomistic. How much would it take to get reyes?

He's about as untouchable as they come.

i knew it was wishful thinking

I'd try to get the Braves invloved and see if Zambrano + Jones would net Salty and Branon Jones or JoJo Reyes.

You still like Reyes? I have heard some discouraging things about him.

He's ok. He's throwing better this year. I don't think he's a can't miss, but if we're getting Salty, then Reyes makes a nice throw-in. Harrison and Smith are better prospects, but I don't think we're going to get either of those.

That is true. I would really like Harrison too though. Maybe if we can get them bidding against the Mets.

Even in a bidding war, the Braves won't part with both Salty and Harrison. Getting one of those guys will be difficult enough.

Pretty swimmingly, since Zito is a Giant.

Heh. I'm not a big Milledge fan either. If the Cubs can get Pelfrey, though, that's the start of a good deal. I still think there are teams that could give up more in the way of ML talent.

i'm starting to get excited about trading Z.

You shouldn't -- consider the person responsible for that deal from the Cubs perspective.

That said... regardless of his antics and his performance this year and even his risk of injury, trading Zambrano is a terrible idea. And no, you're not going to get a pot of gold for him (at least Jim Hendry isn't), so be careful what you ask for....
