After today, by my rough addition, subtraction, multiplication and some division, it looks like Hill, Lilly, Marquis are combining for this line. How in the hell?

I only checked your ERA, but I think the 3 have combined for a 1.62 ERA so far.

Well, first of all, they will by no means keep those collective numbers up. However:

1. Hill is just really good.

2. Lilly is a solid pitcher who figured to be better in the NL, especially the first time around.

3. Marquis figured to be pretty decent this year. His modus operandi is to have a good season in his first year with a club then decline from there. Not sure if that stems from the rumored coachability problems or not. (Not that I supported the length or dollar amount he signed for)

Let's hope all three continue.

It will be interesting to see how well Lilly and Marquis will cope with the wind blowing out once it warms up. I've been pleased with their control so far.

this excludes hill, but i said it in the game thread: marquis (specifically, but lilly to an extent) reminds me of rex grossman early last season. rex threw several interceptable passes when he was doing well, the other team just wasn't catching them. later on, corners weren't dropping the ball. same thing with here. there have been more than a few fly balls that end up on waveland in july and august thrown, and it will catch up to them. hopefully not...

Marquis cannot keep this up if his peripherals stay the same. It's going to be like batting practice come July, I just hope our offense is as good by then as I think it can be.

P.S. TSB > Funeral, but other than that I liked your first set of albums better. :-)

I love Hill, but I'm not putting the "beast" label on him yet until he proves he can stay dominant through the 2nd and 3rd time around the league.

He's gotta be atleast close to the 2nd time around, considering he threw about 8 or 9 dominating performances late last year. .

me too

he just can't throw that middle of the road fastball around the letters of guys like carlos lee and albert pujols and get away with it in wrigley.

I've been very happy with our pitching, especially the surprises of Lilly and Marquis, who have been excellent.

I would agree with that, but part of the reason that his performance is better than his peripherals would suggest is that he has been very careful with big hitters so far this year. He hasn't let the guys with the big power beat him, and that's why the SLG against him has been so low this year. If he keeps that up and minimizes the damage, he has a good shot at being effective.

obviously he's not going to keep going with an ERA under 1.00, but out of the teams he's faced this year -- Atlanta, Cincy and Milwaukee -- he faced Atlanta and Milwaukee once during the second half of last season, and faced Cincy twice. He also faced Pittsburgh, San Fran and Arizona twice each last year. So it's safe to say that most guys he pitches against this year have seen him at least once, if not more.

Marquis, Lilly, Hill, and Z will be fine. Don't worry about them. What I'm worried about is our fifth starter. If we are in the midst of a division race, that fifth starter will be able to make us or break us.

The shame of it is that there are 3 losses figured into the equation because the bats have just sucked most of those games.

i thought Marquis was more of a gb pitcher. Is that accurate?

He has been in the past. He wasn't in 2006, but so far he has a 1.65 G/F ratio, which means that so far he's regaining that status as a ground ball pitcher.

hopefully the wrigley summer won't hurt him too much if he can keep that up.

Meanwhile we are stuck wondering.....what the HELL is wrong with Z??

Not that this explains everything but a friend of mine who has some connections with Ted Lilly said that the Cubs made Ted Lilly's best friend, Cory Miller, the bullpen catcher this year and that Lilly is very comfortable being able to have his closest friend around everyday. Now, what does this have to do with Carlos? Well, the flip side to this is that Carlos is apparently upset at Lilly because he wanted his cousin to be the bullpen catcher and Lou made the choice to go with Lilly's friend instead.

Now, I don't know the accuracy of all this, but I trust the person I heard it from so I believe it to be true. Also, I'm not saying that Carlos suddenly can't pitch because his cousin isn't around, but sometimes comfort levels and having familiar faces around can have an impact psychologically and emotionally and we all know Carlos is a very emotional person. Take it for what it's worth...
