nothing trumps Bobby Cox pulling Andruw Jones out of a game mid inning for letting an easy fly ball drop (doing his normal, lackadaisical jog towards the ball)

And remember, the camera caught Andruw laughing about it...

i just watched the video. It doesnt look as bad as it sounds. It looks like when he hit it he thought it was going foul behind the plate. He had trouble locating it and didnt jump out of the box immediately to run to first base. Probably should of made a lame jogging effort though once he spotted the ball. Ive seen worse 'dogging it'

Come on we've gone 2 pages and nobody's slammed Ramirez about this.

That's only because Ramirez generally plays it off by holding his hamstring, calf, groin, etc. after a pop up.

That is what made me curious. Is it normal practice for a manager to go watch video in the midst of a game?

On XM this morning, they said that someone on the bench mentioned it to Narron, who hadn't seen it. He then watched the replay.

Tattle-tale.

If you want to send a message bench someone for not running out a pop up that is actually good.

He is the better Encarnacion in...the Universe.

He's actually a pretty decent hitter, who's young, and could turn out to be a star.

EDIT: I see this has been covered already.

Either way, whatever, managers really want to feel important, so let them do what they will.

He's going to sit out one game and he'll most likely never walk to the dugout before a ball is caught ever again.

I don't think that's really a bad tradeoff considering the fact that one of the times he doesn't leg it out, the ball could be dropped and really screw things up for the team.

I agree. I understand that it doesn't have an effect on the game 99.99 times out of 100, but you never know if that kick in the pants has an effect somewhere. I don't see it hurting. Sometimes I think people are too anti-hustle.

I don't really have a problem with this either. The guy should have at least jogged to first.

For me it depends on whether Encarnacion has been talked to about this before. I think it's pretty excessive to simply bench a guy the first time he does it. But if Narron's been trying to get him to hustle and he's just not responding, then I'm alright with it.

I don't have a problem with it so long as it's not more than about a 1 1/2 game benching. They really don't have many good options at third so it's bound to hurt them a bit. Though they might be okay if Freel played there for a couple days and Hamilton filled in at center.

I don't have a problem with this at this point in the season. Later in the season I might have some issues though.

I don't get it. Victories aren't less important early in the season. So, what's the difference?

Maybe that the marginal increase in run production rate exceeds the fixed loss from benching him only when multiplied over a very large number of games? But if the lesson is going to stick with him all season, isn't it reasonable to think it will stick for much longer...for as long as he's under Narron, at least?

You cant only assume marginal production from him. This most likely wasn't meant as a message only to him, but all the young players on the team.

That's also hoping and praying somebody doesn't hurt themselves making a stupid hustle play.

Um...

This is absolutely correct, but I don't see how it helps Banedon's argument. He said that benching a guy for not running out a popup is fine if it is done early in the season, but maybe a bad idea if done later in the season. If you start factoring in the idea that benching one guy will improve the production rate of several players rather than just one, the value gained from benching Encarnacion increases.

Let's put it in terms of team run production rates. Since team production rates get multipled by lots more PAs than individual rates, the amount of games needed to balance out the loss from benching Encarnacion would be smaller. As the number of games needed to balance out the benching decreases, the number of games that must be remaining in the season becomes lower. As the number of games that must be remaining the season becomes lower, the greater length of the time period in which the benching makes sense increases.

I wasn't helping Banedon's argument. I was helping yours.

So I finally saw the video of the incident. I'll sum it up for those of you who may not have seen it. Encarnacion acted as though he fouled a pitch back after he made contact. It was obvious he didn't know where the ball was. Somebody probably shouted something to get his attention because he started looking in the air to find the ball. I was under the impression he just threw a fit and didn't want to run.

I did that in little league once, I hit the ball and could have swore it went foul and didn't run. The ball dropped into right field and I got thrown out at first from the outfield.

I didn't get benched though.
