It seems to me that the Brewers are the Indians of the NLC. A number of people are picking them as the darkhorse because they are up-and-coming but I think they are at least a year away.

I keep seeing their name brought up as the favorite dark horse candidate. But I'm having trouble believing in what's going on.

What's the case for the Brewers again?

solid potential with Hardy, Weeks, Hart, Fielder, and to a lesser extent Braun. Probable top 5 pitching staff in the NL (definite if Sheets stays healthy). Not a whole lot of down side. Only definitively weak position will be one of the corner OF spots with Jenkins/Mench probably struggling to provide league average production. Weeks and Hardy are still question marks. Weeks just needs to stay healthy and he'll be league average at worst, and significantly above average at best. Hardy has a whole lot more work to do.

I see some serious downside risk at SS, C and 3B. Yeah, they have a lot of potential with young guys, but probably not one single great hitter, or even great for his position hitter. We're talking about a team that barely scored more than the Cubs last season. It'll take a great deal of internal improvement to substantially climb that list. They'd probably need a 2005 White Sox or 2006 Detroit perfect storm of pitching fortune to really turn around last year's results.

I could see where the excitement is coming from though.

it's hard not to get excited about a non-terrible team in the nl central. look at us! if your team can conceivably throw up 85 wins, you're in the mix.

Yeah, and I especially like their pitching depth. They might actually get better if anyone in the rotation but sheets gets hurt. Something has got to happen in the OF situation though with Mench and Jenkins alreadying complaining. I'm very glad to see Hart being a lock, he should be quite productive. Hopefully Gross gets a decent amount of time as well. They really need to just give 3B to Braun. He'll be a league average 400K 3B.

Not only are you in the mix, but you can inexplicably throw out 11 more wins in the playoffs and win it all! It's f'in great!

yay luck

Your team may have the best case for worst WS winning team of all time.

And yet I'd kill to have that honor.

I'm not sold on the Brewers. I'm not the biggest Weeks fan, but he is really the only OBP they have going for them. Could be a typical Cubs offensive team with a lot of power and nobody on base. Fielder and Hall don't get on base enought for middle of the order hitters. They have the potential to have sub .350 OBPs from every position but 2B, depending on what they do with Jenkins.

Pitching is gonna be good, but overrated. Sheets is gonna have a huge year. Capuano is overrated. Bush was a lot better than his ERA last year and could be an All-Star this year. Suppan and their #5 will be below league average.

The Brewers are going to be a damn good team....if Ben Sheets is healthy.

The funny thing is, even wit him...they have one of the best bets for a good rotation in all of baseball. They're similar to the White Sox two years ago as far as the pitching staff (without Sheets). A bunch of solid guys with good control. With Sheets, that staff can be deadly.

Put it this way....their staff fully healthy:

Sheets - Arguably the NL's best pitcher when he's healthy (along with Oswalt obviously).

Capuano - Good stuff, young, left handed, good control, and he strikes guys out.

Bush - Like the first two guys, his main problem might be HRs. Still, he's this years favorite breakout pitcher. Great control, strong K rate, gets groundballs, good mechanics, durable, and young.

Suppan - Perfect as a #4 guy.

I don't know who the #5 guy is, but Gallardo should make some noise this year.

Vargas?

I think I heard that they want Villanueva to stretch back out into a starters role as well. They seem pretty high on him.

Yeah and they have Inman, Jeffress, and Rogers coming. Not a bad team.

Not sure about Rogers coming anywhere.

Fielder had a .347 OBP last year and a career .398 in the minors.

Hart had a .357 in the minors including .377 and .391 in AAA.

Hall had a .345 OBP last year.

Hardy had a .368 OBP in AA and they think he'll be a .340+ eventually because he has very good plate discipline.

Jenkins had a .357 OBP last year and his 3 year splits vs righties is a .366 if he platoons.

It might be plausible that they only have one guy over .350 but its just as plausible that almost the entire starting lineup is over .340. I don't think this is going to be their undoing.

Brewers heating it up once again.

5-5 in their last 10. That probably is hot in the NL Central.

That's pretty much what their going to average the rest of the way, and that might (will) be enough.
