Yahoo! Sports[/url]"]According to one baseball source, Ricciardi has floated to Wells a proposal of seven years and $126 million, the average annual value of which would exceed Soriano's contract with the Chicago Cubs (eight years, $136 million) by $1 million.

Ricciardi would not comment and Wells' agent, Greg Genske, would only say, "We have yet to have meaningful discussions," about a contract extension.

There are three ways this could go. Wells could sign an extension with the Blue Jays. He could be traded and sign long-term with his new team. Or, no matter where he spends the 2007 season, he could be part of next winter's free-agent class that might include premier outfielders Andruw Jones and Ichiro Suzuki.

He'd be stupid not to take it.

No he wouldn't. He could still get more on the open market. He could have his choice of the team he wants to play for. He could get out of Canada. I wouldn't take the deal at this point. Worst case scenario, he gets severely injured and gets a 1-year deal for a ton of money and gets his shot as a FA after 2008.

Actually, I just looked up his VORP from last year and was surprised to see him listed so high.

Well yeah, he might be worth it if he were able to repeat last year. But more likely he's going to revert to Michael Barrett levels of production, and paying him 9 figures will be a bad idea.

Gotta disagree with you there - worse case scenario he gets injured in 2007 badly enough that it has potential to affect his career at which point he never has a chance to make that kind of money ever again.

Odds if that happening - minute, but if I were him, I'd have to seriously consider a guaranteed 7 year $126 million contract.

What was that contract that Nomar passed on in Boston a few years ago - before he started having a rash of injury problems?? 4 years $60 million? Something like that.

Is it you that continues to compare most signings with Michael Barrett, if so...why the obsession of MB?

Yes, he most certainly would be stupid not to take it. The minimal amount more he MIGHT be able to get on the open market is just not worth the risk of something happening to him on a permanent level. These, as we all know, are guaranteed money contracts. He'd be crazy to turn down that kind of money that is most certainly at least very close (I think above) his market level. Unless he REALLY hates Toronto, there is no sane reason to turn down that deal.

...unless the deal doesn't really exist.

Nice job by Riccardi if true. Tough to get guys to come up north unless you throw some cash at them, and Wells already has a history with the team. Need to show the fans you will keep your guys.

Worst case scenario is pretty bad. He could have a bad 2007, and end up getting much less. He could get seriously injured, and end up getting considerably less. The economy could take a serious hit, which would put a similar drag on salaries as it did earlier this decade.

Financially I don't think he stands a good chance of making much more money. The real benefit is being able to leave Toronto. He won't really have his choice of destination, since not all teams are going to bid on him, but if he really wants out of Toronto, then he should pass on the deal. But there's still an enormous risk involved with that move. Best case scenario is that he ends up getting traded to exactly where he wants to go and is offered that type of contract when he shows up. That negates the risks detailed above, provides security and puts him where he wants to be.

Why does everyone hate Canada so much?

More than likely the high income tax, plus its pretty far from where most of these guys are from, I would guess.

Isn't it going to be harder to get back and forth to Canada after the new year? I seem to recall they'll require passports or visas from everyone? At least that's they way it will be in Mexico. Thought it was the same for Canada.

Uh, I've continued to compare Wells to Barrett, because they're very similar offensive players. I haven't seen any other comparisons to Barrett from anyone though.
