He's losing some of money for security I guess. Alot of people would argue that giving a 6 year deal to a pitcher is insane. You think Kerry Wood was abused? This guy was pitching 160 pitches and then throwing a bulpen session afterwards (thats what they were saying on XM this morning). He also has alot of other odd routines, like he doesnt ice his shoulder. I wonder if they will allow him to continue training in the manner that he has or if they will try to conform him to what all the other Boston pitchers do. I wonder if throwing less pitches for him will make him less sharp or if the change in routine will negatively effect him. 6 years is alot to commit for a pitcher.

If you pay a $51 million posting fee, you'd better sign the guy for five or six years. I can't imagine giving Seibu all that money, then simply signing the dude for three years.

i wish clemens would just go away and stay away

Clemens is just getting started. After he signs with Boston for one year, he's going to want to stay in the AL because of the challenge. But he'll want to go home and pitch in Texas. So he'll go to the Rangers for a year. Then he decides to retire...or not. So instead he goes back to the Yankees for a year to see if he can go out on top. The Yanks win the World Series. Clemens retires again, but decides maybe he should win a World Series back in the National League, with Houston.

Repeat the process about 20 times and he'll finally retire for good.

Yes. Either go away, or atleast just stop this "retirement" nonsense. It's tiresome.

Yawn.

Anyone that is even slightly surprised by this "sudden" progress toward an agreement doesn't really understand how a good agent operates. In the end, Boras will have successfully gotten Boston to pay far more than they originally intended.

Quite simply, he's very good.

4 million more, what an agent!

As has been stated ad-nauseum by many, Boras had little room to work with in this negotiation assuming Matsuzaka was never really willing to go back to Japan. The only way Boras was going to get more for his client, is if the threat to walk away was real, and in this unique circumstance, I don't believe it was.

Boras wanted us to believe respecting Matsuzaka was about more dollars, but that just isn't the way the Japanese culture measures respect.

ESPN reporting a done deal 6 years/52 million. I'm kind of suprised they got it done for 8.67 mil a year.

I'm not so sure why it's a surprise. They did after all have to dish out an extra $50 mill just to talk with him. A 100% sales tax. Even Borass must realize that it's not the same situation as a regular free agent.

I'm not sure how many pitchers in the league could fetch 6/105 if they were free agents right now.

Anyone still upset that the Cubs didn't get the guy? What a huge gamble. Every time the Yankees light him up, it's going to hurt. I hope it works out for them, but I'm glad it's not us.

Off topic: I love your sig! If the 2007 Cubs are as bad as the 2006 Cubs, I'm counting on Sweet Lou to make it entertaining, at least.

Thanks! I did a search for Piniella quotes the first day he got hired and put it up. It's actually longer than that but wouldn't all fit.

Yes, stated by people like me. Doesn't change the fact that warren gave him faarrrrrrr too much credit. Any agent who advised him to hold out couold probably have gotten 52.

This deal was all about Mats having no desire to go back to Japan with his hat in his hand. Barring injury or collapse he would've made at least 10M more just by waiting for his free agency.

You, sir, have inspired me.

As far as on topic, I'm excited to see Matz pitch! This is gonna be cool. 8-)
