I have been unable to find on any site where the Rule V Draft is discussed and the players most likely to get drafted across baseball. I know Baseball America in the past has compliled such a list.

I still shake my head when I look at Dan Uggla's stats from last year and think of the teams who could have drafted him

If I were an enterprising team, I'd take Petrick.

I believe Carmen Pignatiello can be selected, and based on his performance the last couple years, the fact he's a lefty, and especially his showing this fall--I think he gets picked for sure.

Holdzkom too, not sure why the Cubs would protect FOUR catchers but leave someone with his potential open to selection. Stupid.

Didn't the CBA extend the Rule V Draft Eligibility by a year?

Correct. Teams now have four years for players signed at 19 or older and five years for players orignally signed at 18 or younger.

I think Mike Fontenot would be an interesting pick for Dayton Moore and the KC Royals.

Who are other teams prospects that might be worth something for us?

Sounds like Colorado RHP Pedro Strop. BA will have a Rule 5 draft writeup posted on their web site tomorrow.

From Ask BA:

With the new CBA giving teams an extra year of protection for players, this Rule 5 draft may be even duller than usual. The Cubs probably won't lose anyone, but if they do, their top three candidates are lefthander Edward Campusano, second baseman Mike Fontenot and third baseman Casey McGehee.

Campusano, 24, is an intriguing reliever who showed a lively 92-93 mph fastball and a wipeout slider this year. But he also has had problems staying healthy and went down in August with elbow trouble. Fontenot, 26, is an offensive-minded second baseman who hits for average and gets on base, plus he offers a little pop. McGehee, 24, is more of a versatile role player than a potential regular. He has caught and played all four infield positions as a pro, and he could probably handle the outfield as well.

Many believe very few will be drafted this year because of how weak the Rule 5 class is (due to the new CBA rules). They also believe next year will be the "mother lode of Rule 5 selections."

hey Cali, can you explain why next year will be such a mother load?

The extended year takes a ton of the talent that would normally be available this year and bumps them to next year, would be my best guess.

According to Arizona Phil, teams with no room on the 40-man cannot select a player in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft (since they are transferred directly to the 40-man roster). So no chance the Cubs will be picking up anyone for the ML roster.
