My top 5 Rule 5 would be...

Jamie D'Antonia(would like to see on the Cubs, 1B/3B RH'ed with pop)(AZ)

Dan Smith (LHP)(ATL)

Adam Boeve (OF)(PIT)

Ryan Raburn (2B/OF)(DET)

Ambiorix Concepcion (OF)(NYM)

According to Arizona Phil, teams with no room on the 40-man cannot select a player in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft (since they are transferred directly to the 40-man roster). So no chance the Cubs will be picking up anyone for the ML roster.

more of a 40 man question, but couldn't the Cubs move Prior and Rusch to the 60 day DL and temporarily open up a couple roster spots?

No DL in the offseason. The best we could do is throw some money at Glendon to retire, to reclaim his spot this offseason.

looks like we have a spot now that Bynum has been traded

I believe that Bynum was traded to open a spot up for Lilly.

My understanding is that we could wait until after the draft to put Lilly on the roster - other teams are planning on doing that since they're already at 40 men and have to wait for someone to clear waivers.

We could always draft someone in the Rule 5 and then trade him to the team that wants him.

But probably too complicated to pull off.

If I were an enterprising team, I'd take Petrick.

Yea, that kind of move did wonders for Sisco's development.

that's the royals' fault. they should have put him in omaha this season, but decided not to. sisco had a hell of a 2005 and would have been better off as a starter in omaha in 2006.

At least I think they can wait until he's officially signed. My understanding is that he's agreed to terms, but not yet signed. It frequently takes a few days to complete the signing so the player can first undergo a physical.

Tampa has sold the #1 pick to the Oakland A's who will use the pick on San Diego RHP Joakim Soria. MILB.com anticipates Kansas City will use the second pick on Colorado RHP Pedro Strop.

Also:

The Cubs seemed interested in making a pick, but the Pirates at No. 4 seemed to be sitting this one out.

Wow, what an interesting pick in the major league phase of the draft. Lou had to have given some sort of input that the kid could respond favorably to the chance at a major league job. He's incredibly talented and could end up the Cubs CF for a very long time if he can put his personal problems behind him.

I think if Lou feels the kid has a chance, then it is a fantastic use of a roster spot.

Good pick, since there's nothing to risk other than $25,000 if he's returned. I'm especially interested in seeing him make it, since he's from very close to where I live now. I actually saw him in person once at a hair stylist, although I didn't know who he was at the time until after he left and the stylist pointed it out. He has a lot of missed time to catch up from, so I don't know how likely it is he'll stick, but I like taking the chance.

 Josh Hamilton?!?

My thoughts too. That's an interesting power bat for the bench.

I have a hard time believing the Cubs will be able to burn a 25-man roster spot on this guy all year, considering he should be expected to make zero contribution at the ML level given where he's coming from (50 ABs last year at low A, none the three years prior).

Very fascinating pick though. Hope it can somehow work.

9:45 a.m.: Biggest new rumor of the first round: Josh Hamilton won't be a Cub. BA has learned Hamilton will be traded to the Reds for cash.

Which druggie is this? I get them confused.

This kind of gives new meaning to Hendry's hunt for chemistry in the clubhouse.

I guess he's no longer only interested in character guys. Can't complain. I like the idea of a guy who could be an impact here. Maybe all he needs is a little extra Church time to help guide him through his troubles.

Well, scratch what I said. Is this how Jim plans on funding his shopping spree?

So do the Reds now have to keep him on the ML roster all year? If they don't, and he goes back to TB, do the Cubs keep the cash from the trade?

In the AAA phase, (I hope I wrote these down correctly):

KC selected Richard Lewis from the WTenn roster

Cubs selected Jim Henderson from the Nationals

A's selected Andy Shipman from the WTenn roster

The Reds do have to keep him in the majors (unless they work out a trade with Tampa Bay that allows them to keep him and send him down, as the Cubs did with Oakland a few years ago to keep a pitcher who's name escapes me at this time). And I'm almost certain the Cubs would keep the cash from the Reds, since this is a separate transaction from drafting him.
