Ed Campusano was just discussed with Winston & Mayo on MILB.com - they're talking to Milwaukee, and Campy's actually been traded to Detroit for cash considerations. Amazing! The thought that he could actually make that roster is exciting.

forgot to mention that we didn't take anyone or give anyone in the AA phase

i guess this means the cubs didnt lose campusano?

so if he doesnt stick with detroit the whole year, who gets him back the brewers or the cubs?

From a very selfish standpoint, I was sad to see Campy go too. He's a really good guy and his arm had come along. On the other hand, it's hard for me to not be thrilled for him to have an opportunity to make a great club like that.

Oneri Fleita is on with Mayo and Winston now

It's always the original team that gets the player back. Likewise, if Hamilton doesn't stick with the Reds it will be Tampa Bay, not the Cubs, who gets him back. And a couple years ago Baltimore drafted Luke Hagerty from the Cubs, then traded him to Florida. When he didn't stick with Florida he went back to the Cubs, not Baltimore.

Wow, what an interesting pick in the major league phase of the draft. Lou had to have given some sort of input that the kid could respond favorably to the chance at a major league job. He's incredibly talented and could end up the Cubs CF for a very long time if he can put his personal problems behind him.

I think if Lou feels the kid has a chance, then it is a fantastic use of a roster spot.

Maybe 5 years ago.

The kid has never ben above A ball, and has sat out two or three full seasons.

There is no way he is in any position to be the Cubs CF for a long time.

That said, there is no harm in picking him, but I don't think it is anything to get excited about.

Read the follow-up discussion, if you haven't yet. As it turns out the Cubs drafted him in order to then spin him off to Cincinnati (apparently Cincinnati was afraid somebody else would draft him before it was their turn).

I saw it. I wold apply the same reasoning to the Reds. There is no harm in taking the kid, but unless you can work out some kind of trade to keep him in the organization, I don't think there is much reason to be excited.

He would have to be Superman to miss three full seasons, play 15 games of Low A-ball, and step right into a major leage team and succeed.

“Hopefully we can keep him [Hamilton] and get him as many at-bats in winter ball as possible,” Krivsky said. “He has some catching up to do and we’re going to do everything we can as an organization to support him. Being the athlete that he is, those guys tend to make better adjustments faster than your average player.

"We hope he looks at this as a fresh start and feels good about himself--which he should--and his career could take off and get headed in the right direction. I know I’m getting ahead of myself a little bit, but we’re just very excited about having him as part of the Cincinnati Reds organization.”

Another excited front office official is Marlins vice president of player personnel Dan Jennings, who scouted and ultimately drafted Hamilton in 1999.

“I like where he is now, and I love what he could still become,” Jennings said. “The upside has always been there, and I know I’ll be rooting for him with this change of scenery and really, the chance to finally prove he can be a major league player.”

REAL Sports on HBO had a real nice piece on Hamilton. According to the piece he's completely turned his life around thanks to his wife's father. He's been sober for over two years.

IMO, this is a great pick up

Are you saying it is a great pickup if they can work out a deal to keep him in the organization?

I just don't see it as "great" if they expect this guy to somehow stick on a major league roster after playing only 15 games this past year. And those 15 games were the first games he had played since 2002!

There is no way...

So, we lost Campusano, Holdzkom, and Jason Smith. Of that group, I think I'll miss Holdzkom the most.

Campusano and Holdzkom are equally big losses, imo. Both have positives and both have negatives (Holdzkom: health and control, Campusano: health) and are close enough to sticking for a full season. I was surprised Campusano was selected because the Cubs hid the status of his health really well.

Cubs lost in the major league portion:

7. Milwaukee: LHP Ed Campusano - traded to Detroit

17. Houston: RHP Lincoln Holdzkom

21. Toronto: SS Jason Smith

Minor league portion:

2. Kansas City: 2B Richard Lewis

26. Oakland: RHP Andy Shipman

In the minor league portion of the draft, the Cubs picked up RHP James Henderson from the Nationals.

I wish Hendry wouldn't have traded him for cash. I really don't understand the point unless Hendry is working on a trade with the Reds and used this as a sweatener. I hoping the trade involves the Cubs RF for the Reds LF

any news on pignatello or fontenot? with bynum gone maybe mike will ge t a shot as a utility guy next year.

Frankly, I expect the Cubs to trade Fontenot. They don't seem to think he can be a utility guy at all.
