So to summarize, his highest average is in 1/2 a season. Overall career numbers total ... .265

Not sure I would call that "outstanding stick work"

I don't think anyone here cares about batting average. You might as well cite his shoe size.

$20 says Craig Wilson has a better OBP than Derosa next year, smart guy.

where will you be when we here the "we thought we made an attractive offer" line?

(a) we don't even know if the cubs have any interest in drew

(b) we don't know if he wants to play CF full time, or if the cubs think he could play CF full time

© they overpaid by maybe $1-1.5M per year. that's unlikely to prevent them from signing any of the small # of big-ticket players.

I don't have time to read all 21 pages....

so forgive me if I cover already covered territory.

First of all, this is too much to pay for DeRosa. I don't mind him as an option for the bench. I don't like him for a starter.

If we unloaded Izturis, I'd like this move a little more. Right now, we're wasting nearly 10 million on Izturis and Derosa. That's not good.

If Derosa is going to start, I'd rather it be at SS and not second.

Well said -- I mostly agree except I don't think it's necessarily too much to pay if he's expected to be a starter. Prices are up this year. I'm not quite as bummed about this signing as I was the Izzy signing; we now have two back-of-the-lineup guys with DeRosa and Izzy (not to mention Cedeno) ... I was really hoping for Ray Durham at 2B and to bat leadoff

(b) yes, Drew wants to play CF. There was controversy in LA when he was signed because he wanted to play CF and Bradley was already playing that position.

© PECOTA projects Derosa will be worth $650,000 in 2007, $575,000 in 2008, and $500,000 in 2009. That's more than $1 to $1.5 per.

what does that even mean??? I'd like to see this stat for myself to understand it, if possible.

BP's numbers will be blown away by the contracts this year. The early signings will be the bargains. Baseball is flush with cash and will spend it this year with the labor deal in place. Just watch what durham, Pierre, Matthews and others will get. The Cubs will get one of the following 3 1) Soriano 2)Drew 3) CLee.

I like DeRosa for 2 years at 2nd and year 3 as a utility player.

"I love our infield," Hendry said. "I feel great about it. You've got two Gold Glove winners [in Izturis and Lee], a great player at third base and I like our young players."

Looks like we are getting Izturis and Derosa next year up the middle.

Better be getting a LOT of offense from the outfield if that's the case.

Murton, Soriano, Drew from left to right sounds good to me.

DeRosa was not on my 2b wishlist. Durham, Giles, Lugo, Iwamura, Soriano, Loretta, Belliard were on my list.

It's too much money and it's too many years, but I'm not going to go ballistic about this signing until I see what happens with the rest of the offseason. I actually like DeRosa as a platoon with Jones. I like DeRosa as a super-utility player. I like DeRosa as an injury replacement.

If Hendry gets the starting pitching and offense that is necessary to be a good team next year while paying DeRosa more than 4m a year, cool. I'm a bit nervous about that considering Rusch, Neifi and Blanco last year, but it's going to take a lot more than that for me to get worked up over this team.

It's been way too frustrating for that. I just became an uncle today for the 3rd time and the wife and I officially became homeowners today, so Hendry isn't spoiling this day for me no matter what he does.

Welcome to the Cubs, Mark DeRosa.

i.e., signing an OF who can get on base and hit for power

The pitchers will like it. My guess is the Murton, Theriot, Cedeno will all be gone for pitching.

If the Cubs win the WS next year, there are people on here that will complain that they should have won it in 6 instead of 7 games.

Some people just will never stop being critical. The Cubs sucked last year, we all know that. Let's hope DeRosa will help.

What is this garbage? Why can't a person be critical of a signing that sends lots of money to a utility player who is reportedly going to try and be the everyday 2B without being accused of always being critical? Do you seriously not see the potential downside risk to this signing? It's at least as strong as any upside opportunity.

The point it simple, it appears some posters favorite pastime is being critical of anything and everything the Cubs do. If that is ones style, more power to you.

That is absurd. There is clearly a risk with this signing and some feel (justifiably) that DeRosa is being vastly over-paid. Whether you agree or not, it's a valid arguement.

As for my own personal feelings on the trade. I don't like it, but I'm not overly upset either. It seems clear he's being signed to start at 2B, and that's a bad idea, IMO. If he was being signed to platoon with Jones, I'd be happy.

May I assume that someone did the "BABIP analysis post" on DeRosa earlier in this thread?

Yes, I think it was .348 of something like that.

Here's a more detailed analysis:

Suppose DeRosa's:

  • BABIP drops to .300
Spread of singles-doubles-triples-homeruns remains the same
    K/AB ratio remains the same
    BB/AB ratio remains the same

His line will drop from

.296/.357/.456/.813

to

.257/.321/.395/.715

Everyone on your wish list will cost far more, just watch the obscene numbers this winter.

I'm not mad we have Derosa. He is actually a versatile player that has value being versatile. I am disapointed to hear he was signed as a starter, unless that is to start at SS. There were better options for second.

If we get Soriano or Drew, then the offense will be fine with him or without him.

This signing does make me think we will really push to sign Soriano to be our lead-off hitter.

BTW, someone please tell me Derosa was not a type A-B FA.

On a semi-related note, I'm happy to hear Patterson is progressing well. If management feels that Patterson could be ready as early as midseason, I could understand not blocking him entirely with a guy like Durham. This past year, they had no one to play SS outside of Cedeno and Neifi. DeRosa is a much better option than Neifi, IMO.

I tried to take that slant truffle but do you really believe we won't be hearing that hendry offered someone $14 and they signed for $16? At this time of the offseason, that contract makes no sense. DeRosa is not the make or break player for 2007.

Sorry to tell you, he was a B. It does mean now that Derosa doesn't lose us our draft pick as some of the other second basemen would (players like Durham and probably a couple others were type A's and would have lost us a pick), but I understand what you mean that it brings us closer to the quota as well.

to all the critics,

.395/.543/.938

sure would suck to have a hitter who's done that in his career against lefties platooning in right with Jacque, wouldn't it.

hell, his .338/.455/.793 against righties stacks up with DeRosa's career best stats, plus he plays five positions, and the five positions we need backup at.

it was mentioned earlier that he signed with the understanding that DeRosa would be the starting 2B.

well that's a problem in and of itself.
