Thank you, and ndistops.

Oh yeah, and ndistops, how about that BSU/ Michigan game. I was way off on that one prediction something like 56-3. That was pretty awesome.

I was there, best 30 bucks I ever spent in my life just to hear 109,200-some people silent. :D

So, we can either sign one more hitter and a one pitcher, or two more hitters and no pitchers, or two more pitchers of the A-B variety.

This move isn't as nice as it once seemed.

Exactly.

It eliminates the possibility of signing several lower cost A/Bs. That could be a real problem if you're trying to fill out a bench role and have to pick over what's left of the unrated FAs.

Has it been confirmed that Aram was a Sunday signing? Shouldn't have been that hard to retro fit it to Saturday and everyone say it took a while to announce with a straight face. :D

I should get some sort of reward for reading all 34 pages in this thread. That said this isn't that bad of a signing the deal is a little excessive. But my thinking is that we overpaid the best utility guy in baseball to stay a utility guy and have a chance to start. Thats not so bad, Hendry hasn't given him the job yet But someone else would have gaurenteed it thats for sure. I think he'll be pretty productive and the move back to the N.L. will defintely help. The way contracts have gone in the last couple of years 4.3 mil may be a steal for what Derosa provides us. Everyone loves Todd Walker and this guy is younger, a better defender, and possesses similar offensive skills.

Also please stop with the JD Drew man love. I like the guy too but he is not the end all cure all. Especially in cf, where he hasn't played since 1999. If we get him great if not no more whining.

Completely aree with you!

Hendry and DeRosa's comments make it clear that Mark was not signed to be a bench player.

Just look at the frontpage of Cubs.com:

"Cubs lock up second by locking in DeRosa"

He's not being brought in as a bench player.

The Cubs have 3 left at their disposal. There were more than 62 Type A/B FAs.

I don't agree UK unless the Cubs and Ramirez's agent can document the signing took place during the free agency election period.

If it didn't, Ramirez and DeRosa both count against the quota.

DeRosa, Theriot, and Izturis: Who's the odd man out?

None of them. They will all make the team next year. Cedeno figures to be the odd man out next year.

Nice. We've got one of the worst middle infields in baseball all set and ready to go. I'll be weeping with joy every time they generate runs, money and the ability to fly each time they catch the ball.

Given that the company line (see the front page of Cubs.com) is that DeRosa is the Cubs' new 2nd baseman, this deal blows hard. Unless something drastic happens, our middle infield is shaping up to be Theriot, DeRosa, Izturis and Cedeno. They could have held onto Neifi and Walker for much cheaper and likely have the same terrible results. Awful.

Looks like we are getting Izturis and Derosa next year up the middle.

I don't think Ramirez ever could've counted against the quota.

I'd rather have derosa at 4.3 than neifi at 2.5. Honestly.

Carries Muskat / Cubs.com[/url]"]DeRosa could bat anywhere in the lineup, including second, and also can fill in at other positions if needed.

"He does give Lou a lot of options," Hendry said. "But we brought him in to play second base."

I can only hope that Lou gets the final decision and that he pays more attention to splits and performance than Dusty ever did. I'd like this move more if he was being brought in as a super-utility guy ... yes, he'd be expensive for that, but he can hit lefties ... promising him the starting 2B job makes me queasy.

Well, DeRosa fits more of the Walker role and Izturis is the nu-Neifi. My point is we've barely improved the middle infield, if at all, at too much cost.

It's certainly not the end-we need upgrades elsewhere, but Izturis and Derosa are at least as good as most team's catcher/and either their 2b or SS, whichever is worse. We just happen to have our offense at catcher and our defense at SS and to a lesser extent second (lesser extent because Derosa is not as offensively deficient), while most teams have one good offensive middle infielder and the other one is deficient, along with most catchers. Upgrade some of the other positions, and this offense can still be good.

Aren't we limited to signing 4 Type A or B FA's? Ramirez is one since his deal was signed on Sunday. DeRosa makes two. That leaves only two more.
No, Ramirez isn't one. He never filed the paper work.. The offices of MLB are open M-F. He may have missed the exculsive deadline, but never filed. so, we still can sign 3 more.

Free agency isn't automatic, you must file.

Ramierez filed a few days after the filing period opened. At least a week ago.

Ramirez files

You are wrong. They had an exclusive period BEFORE he could file. You should read up on how it works.

I think the biggest thing is we probably could have gotten near-DeRosa production for much cheaper with a combination of Fontenot, Theriot, and Cedeno. Instead, we overpay for DeRosa, leaving less money to spend on actual FA's with worth. It's like a broken record with Hendry.

Nonsense. That is silly. Why does it end anything?

Better be getting a LOT of offense from the outfield if that's the case.

The pitchers will like it. My guess is the Murton, Theriot, Cedeno will all be gone for pitching.

good ridance to cedeno. i very highly doubt murton or theriot are going anywhere.

Really? Bet they are gone by spring for pitching.
Looks like Theriot is almost assured a spot on the bench:

"We certainly think Ryan Theriot will be in a quality spot to make the ballclub," Hendry said of the right-handed infielder, who batted .328 in 53 games with the Cubs last season. "Lou saw him and liked him. In the end, people will have to play to earn their time.

Because I think getting guys like Izturis and DeRosa indicate next to nothing has changed in Hendry's mind as to how to build this team. I have zero confidence in him finding anyone for the OF except for another Jones or Pierre-esque player and a couple of average journeyman pitchers. As soon as I see something that indicates he's adjusted his team building policy, hey, I'll be jumping for joy. Sadly, with the last 2 positions we've needed to improve significantly and he's made changes at, 2nd and SS, he's tanked miserably. Why is he going to be any different improving the OF or the starting rotation? With the exception of the bullpen, Hendry hasn't indicated at all he has what it takes to make the drastic improvements this team needs. Almost all of his trades and signings in the last 6 months are just staying the course and not rocking rhe boat at all. He's taking no chances on anything even remotely close to a big signing or trade.
