So is Derosa going to be batting second or will he bat 7 or 8? I am a bit confused on where he fits in the lineup.

It's probably way too early in the offseason to be making those predictions.

Will the Cubs have Drew or Soriano. Will they have Tejada or Carl Crawford? Will they have A-Rod or Burrell?

I don't even think you can really pencil DeRosa anywhere into the line up, let alone what spot in the batting order, until the offseason unfolds.

I understand that. I was just wondering in and ideal world where he would fit. Like where do his career stats point to him being most effective.

Last year he batted mostly 5th and 6th. Which I think is absolutely ridiculous.

I agree that this contract won't make or break the Cubs and their spending and he can be a quality super-sub, if he's starting, it will reduce the chances of the Cubs improving offensively in both of the areas where they need it most (top of the order hitter and middle of the order).

As the starting 2B, he doesn't get on base enough to hit at the top and he doesn't hit for enough power to hit in the middle. He's a good btm of the order hitter and the Cubs have no one in CF, a bad hitting SS (cedeno Izturis), and the pitcher.

Get A-Rod at SS and Roberts/Lofton in CF and it'll be fine.

I guess, not all GMs need to have a brain to hold down the job.

Brilliant. $4 mil will be cheap by the end of the winter.

so why not wait until the end of the winter to sign DeRosa? What's the rush? He is not the missing link from a cubs championship team.

"I love our infield," Hendry said. "I feel great about it. You've got two Gold Glove winners [in Izturis and Lee], a great player at third base and I like our young players."

Looks like we are getting Izturis and Derosa next year up the middle.

Better be getting a LOT of offense from the outfield if that's the case.

The pitchers will like it. My guess is the Murton, Theriot, Cedeno will all be gone for pitching.

good ridance to cedeno. i very highly doubt murton or theriot are going anywhere.

Really? Bet they are gone by spring for pitching.

Looking at DeRosa's numbers, he really hasn't been that good except for last season. I wish he weren't promised the starter's job. I wonder if Lou will stick with him when he struggles, or if he'd go to Theriot.

I don't like that Hendry is talking as if shortstop is set with Izturis. Hopefully, that's just GM-speak.

Unfortunatly Vance, I don't think Hendry would have traded Maddux if he didn't think Izturis was his SS. I think he (and a lot of other Baseball Men) still lives in the 1970s-1980s when the SS was there soley for his glove. Not a bad idea if you have a strong line up around him. But the Cubs don't.

I really haven't watched DeRosa, either in the field or with the bat. The stats don't make me excited, but something could have clicked. He certainly credited his latest hitting coach for changing his approach this past season. Let's hope that's what did the trick and it wasn't a fluke.

Don't forget the market is out of control anyways. Guys like Roberts, who is 35 are talking about 3 years. Pierre is talking about 10 million a year. If DeRosa doesn't work out then Theriot can step in. Everyone is going to get overpaid this offseason. Deal with it.

Then deal with the losses the Cubs will produce yet again this year..

Yeah, the Cubs are going to lose because they signed Mark DeRosa to a three year deal. Right.

This is exactly the same way we started last off season and that was a hoot now wasn't it?

Why is the Detroit Tigers going to extended Nefti Perez for $5 mill per yr?

I can't wait until the Red Sox sign Drew and everyone blames this signing as the reason the Cubs didn't sign him.

I wouldn't go that far but I will be disappointed if we don't sign Drew or at least one of the top tier FA available.

I don't have time to read all 21 pages....

so forgive me if I cover already covered territory.

First of all, this is too much to pay for DeRosa. I don't mind him as an option for the bench. I don't like him for a starter.

If we unloaded Izturis, I'd like this move a little more. Right now, we're wasting nearly 10 million on Izturis and Derosa. That's not good.

If Derosa is going to start, I'd rather it be at SS and not second.

Well said -- I mostly agree except I don't think it's necessarily too much to pay if he's expected to be a starter. Prices are up this year. I'm not quite as bummed about this signing as I was the Izzy signing; we now have two back-of-the-lineup guys with DeRosa and Izzy (not to mention Cedeno) ... I was really hoping for Ray Durham at 2B and to bat leadoff

I can't really blame you there, having Izturis on this team really bugs me. I'm hoping that Hendry works a miracle and gets him out of here.

Is that suppose to be clever, or you you just not understand baseball?

If it is suppose to be clever, it fails.

Can Izzy play third?

Mark DeRosa

Plays lots of positions, versatile

Can't hit righties to save his life

Can hit lefties a fair amount

Comfortably wrong side of 30

$1-2m for one year, $1.5-3m for two years

Bench guy you want to keep on the bench

Stupid Cubs. Again.

please post more.

Do y'all think that the DeRosa signing mean that Hendry thinks he has his second baseman for 2007? That better not be the case, old Jimbo better be looking for a top notch second baseman that can really help this team, like Mark Loretta or somebody else...or I really am going to be furious.
