I don't suppose you guys have checked MLBTradeRumers.com, but the site is reporting that Kinzer asked for $90 mil. over 6 years, Hendry apparently said yes and then Kinzer rejected it believing that Ramirez deserves Beltran money. If true, how crazy is this off season going to get. Personally, I'd much rather give Soriano Beltran type money than Ramirez. Soriano can at least beat a team with his speed and power (as can Beltran), but Aramis isn't going to scare anyone on the basepaths. I say if you're going to overpay, give it to Soriano and one or more pitchers and fill in the rest of the roster with solid players that don't cost an arm and a leg. I'll take my chances with a middle of the line-up of Soriano, Lee, Jones, Barrett and Murton if the starting pitching and bullpen is great.

That's funny. You'd rather give the big money long term contract to the guy who's not as good and it 3 years older.

Ramirez was the only FA worth Beltran money. And MLBtraderumors is garbage.

This rumor is as valid as any of the other ones concerning Ramirez. Can you imagine Hendry finally caving in to the 6yr/$90M demand at the last minute and Kinzer telling him that it wasn't enough all the sudden? I think other reporters like Bruce will have the inside skinny on what happened. But this story, is the first to actually provide some insight on Hendry's thinking.

Not that I agree with it.

If that happened or not doesn't change the fact that giving Soriano a Beltran-like contract would be historically dumb.

Beltran money? LORDY How's a small market team like the Cubs supposed to be able to sign anyone asking for Beltran money?

He's exactly the type of player Hendry would over pay for.

I know..we barely sold out last year. How are we supposed to come up with that kind of money?

Hendry is a historically terrible GM.

Well there Serena we could go to ole Ben Johnson's farm and steal some chickens to help with the cost.

But if true, it mean ARAM had not intention of signing with the cubs and was going to test the market anyway. What is the hometown discount 7 years 110m?

Well spoken.

Instead, we can trade Felix Pie and Donald Veal to the Tigers for Neifi Perez and only pay him 7m a year. Just look at the wonderful savings Hendry will be giving the Cubs.

Posted

Until Hendry comes out and says the Cubs will no longer talk to ARam or ARam signs with another team, this thing isn't over.

We have a ton of money to spend. Even if we have to pay Beltran money (unlikely), we're still not priced out of the market.

Remember that Boras started out at 10/200M for Beltran and got 7/119M.

Kinzer is claiming that he can get 7 years, 17M per for ARam. I don't think he gets it, even in this market.

It wouldn't matter to me if the MLB rumors were true. I wouldn't care if Aramis refused to offer a "home town discount".

If he leaves, it's because Aramis wants to play for a team that has a chance to win, which would still make this Hendry's fault for making the poor decisions the last few years to make this team a team that has no chance of winning.

I am absolutely amazed at how many people are surprised by Aramis Ramirez not signing. Even if the Cubs had offered you the moon, wouldn't you want to find out if there was another team willing to offer the moon, a couple dozen stars and an option on a comet?

Rare is the free agent who jumps at the first offer.

That's why your GM needs to be able to sell the heck out of your team and force him to want to stay.[/quote]

You're kidding, right?

I wouldn't pay Ramirez Beltran type money. Ramirez is a below average fielding 3B, he is limited on the base paths, he has the reputation of not running out fly balls, and when D-Lee went down with the wrist injury Ramirez was not productive. I don't blame Hendry for not wanting to give Ramirez a Beltran type contract.

You would need a gun (or some other credible threat of force) or a contract stupidly large to force me to want to stay without checking the FA market if I was in his position.

There are simply no adequate words

-Where was Lee April and September of 2004?

-Manny Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez are both slow, too. Would you pass on them?

-Aramis had the best defensive season of any NL 3B this season.

-God forbid someone jog out a fly ball. It negates all their skill and talent.

How do you figure that? Dude is the Todd Walker of 3B. He makes the plays right at him and rarely mishandles the ball, but has below average range...and for 3B, that's saying something.

Umm...ARod is far from slow. Just look at his SB totals to see evidence of that.

Ok, if that rumor is true I'm now just as pissed off at Kinzer/Aramis as I am at Hendry.

6/90 is still $15/yr if you don't backend the deal. He'll get plus that easily from someone else.

When did 'Beltran money' become shorthand for Outrageous Contract? (am I misinterpeting the intent of using that phrase?)

BTW, Beltran signed his contract -- which to me isn't hugely onerous -- after asking for 10Y/$200M out of the gate. Aramis' agent is starting the process with Beltran's contract as the asking price out of the gate.

It matters when Ramirez jogs out a fly ball, and then the outfielder miss plays the ball, but still manages to throw out Ramirez at 2b.

A-Rod is not a slow runner. A-Rod will also give you 22SB a year. I dont think you can compare 2 future hall of famers to Aramis. Yes, Aramis is a good player, but he is not a guy who deserves 117 million a year in my opinion.

How often does that happen? Once, maybe twice a year?

I would argue that there's not a single human being on this earth that deserves that much a year.
