For a man whose ass is on the hot seat this year Hendry sure has some big ones to let Aramis hit FA. Im actually optimistic the Cubs will sign him. For Hendry to take an incredible risk like this he must have incredible confidence in gauging the market for Aram or Aramis has some crazy demands like length of contract. I dont think the $ is the issue now (by that i mean per year), Aramis is just trying to find a suitor to get him the 6th year and then Jim will cave in and sign and match that offer for Aram.

This shows that the Cubs will not do what it takes to retain a star. Why should we have any faith in them retaining Zambrano? If Pie becomes Vlad, they'll offer him 5/$75 and say they did their best. We will perpetually let star players go over a few million per.

Are we now the Chicago Expos?

My goal is singular. The purpose of why I have been asked to do this job is for the Cubs to win the World Series. Not win the wild card or win the division or win the pennant, but it's time to win. It's time to win the World Series. And I think we need to reward these tens of millions of fans who have waited for a long time.

Thanks for the reward, bub.

You give Jim Hendry far too much credit.

I just came to the realization that I was only caught up to pae 67 cuz i thought this was the old ARAM thread... this is new I guess..

WHATS HAPPENING

I think I can break this down.

•our exclusive negotiating window w/ ARam has closed.

•Hendry may have never gotten past a paltry 5/73.

•In a preemtptive strike against fan apathy, John McDonough set into motion a plan that will invite additional guest singers between the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings of every home game.

•It was revelaed that Jim Hendry, due to anatomical shortcomings, is invulnerable to a swift kick to the "charlie brown."

•The news had stunning, dramatic effects on NSBB posters.

•USSoccer climbed into a full bathtub while holding his plugged-in toaster.

•O_O reached new levels of anger for him, which is roughly 1/4 as angry as Gooney is on any given day.

•OleMiss converted to radical Islam; JR bought a Prius

•Treeman injected heroin into his forehead on Hendry's doorstep. He is now dead.

•Sethuel tried to do so as well, but the needle didn't penetrate the six-inch layer of vomit covering his face. A full recovery is excpected.

•ndistops bought a 6-pack and passed out 3/4 of the way through the first can. It should be noted it was a 6-pack of cream soda.

•The angels or dodgers will swoop in and compensate ARam fairly.

•One of Scott Brosius/Shane Andrews/Kevin Orie/Steve Buechele will be ARAM's replacement.

•Last year's team will soon look like a juggernaut compared to waht we're going to assemble.

•All hope is lost.

hope that helps.

Awesome.

Yeah, the Cubs still have a chance to re-sign Aramis. But if 5/$73 was their best offer when they had exclusive rights to talk to him and now the Angels, Dodgers and Red Sox have a chance, the Cubs really have little shot at re-signing him.

The offense was horrible last year. And then they lost their one consistant, good run producer. The Cubs can recover with some great trades and free agent signings...but there aren't enough assets to swing any of those trades and if the Cubs aren't willing to top 5/$73M for the best free agent of the class, they probably aren't going to do that for others who might be worth it too.

Hendry should blow it all up because that should be the best way for the Cubs to to emerge as a contender down the road. Of course, Hendry's job is on the line so he won't do that. But the way Hendry has acted, maybe his job isn't on the line?

It's pointless to root for a team like this. It really is. They don't learn from mistakes, ever. They act like they are in Cincinatti and not in Chicago.

We will not win a World Series under this GM and this ownership.

Agreed. There is a part of me that says enough is enough.

Correct. Now, doesn't Aramis compare pretty darn well to the other 2? Players A and C are both players everyone on the planet wants on their baseball teams and who made a lot of money on the FA market.

Player A was one year younger. Player C was 3 years younger. Both play in the same major market.

I thought it was ARod, but when I looked it up, his OPS wasn't 1.206 that last year. I think you have a typo with taht OPS.

Certainly makes sense that ARam's numbers match up with these guys. He's a solid player. I still can't shake the feeling that he's not in that class though...something must be wrong with me.

I think both of them being gold gloves makes them worth 2-3 million more per year. Thats why they are both superstars and the other is just a very good player. Give aramis 6/90 15 million a year.

Well, I suppose McDonough should hold off for at least a month or two on announcing the ticket price increase.

Aramis will not be back. If the Cubs couldn't work out an arrangement that made both sides happy during an exclusive negotiating window, they certainly won't work it out now. How much more time will Kinzer and Aramis want to waste with an organization that isn't serious about retaining his services?

With Aramis leaving, free agents are not going to want to join a team that finished in last place and then just gave up their best player by pinching pennies.

A trade for A-Rod is not the slightest bit reasonable after Aramis leaves. A-Rod would have to waive an NTC to join a team that doesn't have the parts necessary to finish .500, let alone challenge for the division title in the weakest division in baseball. It's not going to happen.

It's funny that Hendry can pay Neifi 5x more than his value, but Hendry can't take the money he would have given Neifi and add it to Aramis' contract.

5 years? If it's truly years that held up this deal, Hendry has no business being a GM at a used car lot let alone a baseball team. You could give Aramis a 10 year deal and it would still be a better deal than letting him leave for another team.

Signing Aramis might have helped lure other free agents here. Letting him walk discourages other quality players from wanting to play here.

Just wow!

Posted
I am really pissed off now. This is just inexcusable. I take back everything nice I ever said about Hendry, letting Aramis walk is the final straw.

The Tribune is as much to blame for this mess as Hendry, MacPhail, Himes, Lynch etc. Just because they allowed the budget to go up to $100 million does not let them off the hook. They could easily have allowed Hendry & MacPhail to go higher to get the elite FAs but did nothing.

On the other hand, they should have been able to recognize that MacPhail was not going to get the job done and replaced him a long time ago.

I'm afraid this mess is not going to stop until the Tribune sells the Cubs. The whole house is a wreck and needs to be cleaned out.

The sub-.500 record under 25 years of ownership doesn't give me the warm fuzzies, either. It's broken; it keeps getting worse (remember the glorious late 80s?!); bring on the new ownership!

You're right. It was 1.026.

As far as "Gold Gloves" adding $2-3m onto the contracts...whatever. Palmiero won a GG. Aramis should have won the GG this year.

I am absolutely amazed at how many people are surprised by Aramis Ramirez not signing. Even if the Cubs had offered you the moon, wouldn't you want to find out if there was another team willing to offer the moon, a couple dozen stars and an option on a comet?

Rare is the free agent who jumps at the first offer.

That's why your GM needs to be able to sell the heck out of your team and force him to want to stay.

Here is a blurb on mlbtraderumors.com regarding ARAM.

If this is true, it would certainly shed some light on Hendry's thinking. I'm not defending him, but it would certainly explain why Hendry may have walked away from the table.

A Cubs source of mine tells me that Hendry offered the original six year, $90MM contract that agent Paul Kinzer wanted. Kinzer of course rejected it, as he feels his client is worth Beltran money now.

The Cubs camp is not happy with Kinzer after this situation as well as Rafael Furcal last winter. The strained relationship may stop the Cubs from chasing Vicente Padilla.
