If Hendry couldn't sign ARam to a contract how is he going to sign the other top free agents?

So true! Soriano or any other FA are going to command 6-7 year deals. This offseason is looking to be a major faluire. We are basically a expansion team...I hate Hendry and the entire Cubs Org. What a bunch of small market thinkers. World Series my ass McDonough!!!!

Maybe Hendry is planning to empty out the farm for these two guys.

Though the Marlins will listen to offers for anyone, a team official said the payroll has been raised enough to afford Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera (who could combine to top $12 million). . . . .

From Miami Daily Herald. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/15991908.htm

The problem is we don't have a farm to empty.

My sources say that the Cubs wanted a clause that fined ARam $1M every time a routine pop up bounced off his head to lose a game for the Cubs and he refused to agree!

Funny. Remember that when we're watching Geoff Blum hustle his way to hitting .263 with 11 HR's next year for a 69-93 team.

OMG, you're right, now that I think about it I am afraid the Cubs could go 66 - 96 and finish with the worst record in the NL without ARAM! Oh wait...

I would like to have ARam back, but just like the hated Juan Pierre he did nothing when the Cubs needed him last year. His stats were built up in garbage time when the team was hopelessly out of contention. It would still be nice to sign him because it is one less hole to fill, but if not then take the money and try something new.

I guess Derrek Lee's 2005 stats meant nothing, either. We finished below .500.

Did Ramirez vanish when his team needed him the most in October of 2003 or September of 2004? No? Were his stats those years built up in garbage time? How about his 2005 numbers? No?

Whoops. There goes that argument.

It's a stupid statement based on nothing but what the Chicago media shoves down your throat.

So, which ticking time bomb do we bet our lives on now? Nomar? Huff? Moore/Theriot/Fontenot/anyone else we have in the minors? :?

Didn't Huff have all kinds of problems with Lou in Tampa?

I feel sick, guys. Really sick.

If Aram doesn't get re-signed I'm giving up on 2007. We have NO chance without him, unless by some miracle we trade for A-Rod.

I know that you know this already, but Jim has essentially put himself in a spot where he has to acquire THREE top tier hitters and two good starters.

Forget it.

wow, was I drunk and angry last night.

Now I'm just angry.

Sorry about the vomiting. And swearing.

No apologies necessary. You were very entertaining, though snood's synopsis took the cake.

We'd be lucky to get one of those top tier players let alone three of them?

Are you asking or telling, Mr. Burgundy?

This shows that the Cubs will not do what it takes to retain a star. Why should we have any faith in them retaining Zambrano? If Pie becomes Vlad, they'll offer him 5/$75 and say they did their best. We will perpetually let star players go over a few million per.

It's pointless to root for a team like this. It really is. They don't learn from mistakes, ever. They act like they are in Cincinatti and not in Chicago.

We will not win a World Series under this GM and this ownership.

Just ONE time I'd like to see Jim H. have the guts to come on here and defend himself. Never happen. Maybe Bruce M. can give some words of encouragement after he cleans the barf off his keyboard after writing the Aramis Ramirez Cubs Obiterary.

I agree with respect to the GM, but not the ownership. The problem isn't the amount of money the Trib is willing to spend, but rather how Hendry uses it.

I agree. Other teams win with a payroll far less then ours.

You don't think that there's some organizational root to the fact that we refuse to pay market value for anyone?

I think the whole organization is just dumb, that's why they don't pay market value. It goes clear back to Maddux when I believe that Larry Himes thought Greg Maddux didn't deserve more than what was offered because he didn't win 20 games until 1992, even though he had won 18 and 19 games in previous seasons and clearly was worth it. But of course paying for Danny Jackson WAS worth it. It's like an insidius disease and it becomes contagious to the next batch of management types that run the team.

Could be, but if the Org itself is to blame for anything its horrendous hires, not an unwillingness to spend money.

Sigh.

I guess it doesn't matter. We're going to be terrible either way.

The Tribune is as much to blame for this mess as Hendry, MacPhail, Himes, Lynch etc. Just because they allowed the budget to go up to $100 million does not let them off the hook. They could easily have allowed Hendry & MacPhail to go higher to get the elite FAs but did nothing.

On the other hand, they should have been able to recognize that MacPhail was not going to get the job done and replaced him a long time ago.

I'm afraid this mess is not going to stop until the Tribune sells the Cubs. The whole house is a wreck and needs to be cleaned out.
