So the plan is to replace Ramirez with an inferior bat (Soriano) with an even larger contract?

Hendry had better have a great excuse for this, like Ramirez slept with his wife and that's why she left him, b/c it flat out just doesn't make sense to let him leave when he's giving you a hometown discount.

This outcome actually makes me very skeptical about the hometown discount reports.

How so bro?

Kinzer said Ramirez wants to get something done. "There will be a hometown discount," Kinzer said. "They definitely want to keep him, and that is still his No. 1 choice. [Cubs GM Jim Hendry] knows where we stand." Ramirez is set to ask for a six- or seven-year deal elsewhere if the Cubs don't meet his price.

You don't think it is beyond the realm of possibillity for Kinzer to put that out there so other teams will call up and in a very un-tamperlike manner insinuate how much they would give him?

I'm sure Hendry made a good enough offer that if the hometwon discount and the "Cubs are my #1" were really true a deal would have been done a long time ago.

I think ARam stays with the Cubs. I really do. I've thought about it a little more.

It's got to be that Hendry/Kinzer couldn't come to an agreement on what market value for Ramirez is. Now Kinzer goes out and talks to teams and comes back to Hendry with their offers, which will be big.

We're going to pay out the backside now. I don't think Hendry will let ARam get away, but we're going to pay a lot more now that Hendry couldn't close the gap today.

How often does a team that loose exclusive rights end up resigning the player.

I can't think of one time with a big name player.

I still hope Hendry gets this done and it get announced tomorrow.

Giles did last year. I don't keep track of that sort of thing, but players sign back with their old teams all the time post-exclusive window.

Hendry got caught playing hardball and now Kinzer is going to milk him big now that he doesn't have any leverage (non-concrete market value).

Besides the almighty $, I can't think of any reason why any player would want to play for the Cubs right now to tell you the truth.

They aren't close to being a contending team, their coming off a truly pathetic season and they have a whole new staff of "bosses" coming. I still believe deep down that the majority of ballplayers are competitive and hate losing - if they have a choice to play for $17 mil a year for a pathetic team or $15 per year for an organization that looks to be contending or at least going in the right direction, I gotta believe most of them would opt for the chance to win.

Maybe I'm wrong - who knows - it's a long offseason, but 2007 isn't starting out on a very promising note so far.

This just drives me insane. We're top 5 in payroll most of the time and we never see us adding big-time free agents and we never keep the big-time free agents that we have. I'm so sick and tired of this crap.

Paul Konerko. That said, I still doubt this'll happen with ARam.

All in favor of David Bell at 3rd and ARod at SS?

That would settle nice after this kick to the crotch.

Vernon Wells and JD Drew in the OF

Anyone for a beautiful game used autographed bat signed by the newest free agent himself? High quality wall-hanging display case included.

I'll trade you a #16 jersey (with name on back) given to me by NSBB

maybe we can trade Freddie Bynum for Manny Ramirez and ManRam will wear #16.

We get power and lots of fans save money on jerseys.
