I said it very early on, and I'll say it again here...

If Aramis doesn't sign with the Cubs (which it appears more and more likely that he won't), the Red Sox will be the first ones standing in line to make him a great offer which will give them the offensive player they need to replace Manny who will be traded as will Lowell.

The only way I could be placated by letting Aramis walk is if we get A Rod to take his place - be it at SS or 3B I don't care.

This organization has proven to it's fans over and over again that as long as they can fill the stands with fans and sell craploads of merchandise, they couldn't care less about winning.

Things were once good?

If on that day, you told me everything that has happened to the Cubs since then, I likely would have died from laughter.

That or accept it, knowing how the Cubs were involved.

I personally think the board should go away from its "family friendly" parameters this evening to emphasize how truly pissed we are at this.

Im not pissed off.....we're better off without that lazy bum

Here's Rotoworld's take:

Free agent Aramis Ramirez was unable to come to terms on a new contract with the Cubs on Saturday and will test the market.

It seems likely that if the Cubs were going to be able to sign him, it would have gotten done during their exclusive window. Now that he's up for bids, he's likely to receive big offers from the Angels and Dodgers. The Tigers, Orioles, Phillies, Red Sox and Giants are other candidates to make bids.

So the plan is to replace Ramirez with an inferior bat (Soriano) with an even larger contract?

Hendry had better have a great excuse for this, like Ramirez slept with his wife and that's why she left him, b/c it flat out just doesn't make sense to let him leave when he's giving you a hometown discount.

The same GM that traded Jose Hernandez and two minor leagures for ARam watches him walk out the door fully knowing he had a home-town discount.

Unbelievable, just unbelievable.

Oh, and apperantly this is the last of Kerry Wood as well?

This outcome actually makes me very skeptical about the hometown discount reports.

Prior and Z are the only one left from 2003 if Wood leaves.

I think ARam stays with the Cubs. I really do. I've thought about it a little more.

It's got to be that Hendry/Kinzer couldn't come to an agreement on what market value for Ramirez is. Now Kinzer goes out and talks to teams and comes back to Hendry with their offers, which will be big.

We're going to pay out the backside now. I don't think Hendry will let ARam get away, but we're going to pay a lot more now that Hendry couldn't close the gap today.

your 100% sure he had a home-town discount? I don't quite buy all that talk. I think he just wants to move on.

How so bro?

Kinzer said Ramirez wants to get something done. "There will be a hometown discount," Kinzer said. "They definitely want to keep him, and that is still his No. 1 choice. [Cubs GM Jim Hendry] knows where we stand." Ramirez is set to ask for a six- or seven-year deal elsewhere if the Cubs don't meet his price.

How often does a team that loose exclusive rights end up resigning the player.

I can't think of one time with a big name player.

I still hope Hendry gets this done and it get announced tomorrow.

This sucks.

I'm not going to blast Hendry though. No one knows what Aramis was demanding. To blast him when you have no idea what he said no to is pretty damn unreasonable.

That said, I'm still pissed. I hope we can find a way to convince Aramis to come back. But I'm convinced that he simply doesn't want to play for the Cubs.

With Rosey and others claiming it's over for the Cubs how does one believe a deal will be announced tomorrow?

I don't buy it, I think ARam gave Hendry and Co. plenty of time to make a deal. We did nothing but sign W.Miller and place a bid on the Japanese dude.

Either Kinzer/ARam ended up wanting Beltran type numbers or Hendry wants to move in a different direction. A direction that leads to another losing season.

As much as it seems like Ramirez is gone for good...I can't help but think about what I would do if I were in his shoes. There are essentially 2 options he either wants to be a Cub, or he doesn't.

Assuming he wants to be a Cub he still should take advantage of other teams driving up the price. It's not like if other teams drive up the price he can't still sign with the Cubs. He got the clause for a reason, I don't see why he wouldn't take advantage of it. He can be using this opportunity to see what other teams are willing to offer in order to get a market-value deal from the Cubs. It's not like the Cubs are going to say "nevermind, now that you're a free agent we don't want you anymore." He knows they need him and they should be willing to pay as much as it takes. How likely is this, I'm not sure.

Assuming he doesn't want to be a Cub...well who can blame him?
