Well, a very good game by IU tonight. They made a ton of mistakes, and that hurt them a great deal. Stemler's absence hurt a lot, the Duke home court officiating didn't help, but the biggest reason this was a loss is that this team doesn't quite have that swagger or ability to play together yet. I see the pieces though, so this game encouraged me more than some of the wins against the inferior opponents did. They just made some key mistakes, but that can be corrected.

Wow, hell of a comeback for IU. Too bad they couldn't get a shot off there at the end.

I liked the fight I saw from them. Could have just given up after the awful first half. Its a tall task going up against Duke without one of your best players.

Terrible clock awareness by IU on the final 10 seconds.

Terrible. Terrible.

I definitely agree on this-as good as Bassett played, when I saw him drive it inside the 3 point line I'm just screaming "NOOOOO". It was just a classic freshman late game mistake.

This happens every year in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It seems like the Big Ten teams always find ways to lose close games or games they should win.

Indiana had tons of opportunities to win that game and just blew it. Illinois could do nothing in the final three minutes tonight. Michigan wouldn't have lost to that NC State team if they hadn't played like dog meat in the middle 30 minutes. Now Northwestern is folding down the stretch after having a 10 point lead with about 2 minutes to go.

I didn't think the Big Ten had a shot this year, but this could easily be 3-3 or 4-2 in favor of the Big Ten.

Aside from the last couple of minutes and craptacular FT shooting (11 for 20), NU looked pretty solid tonight. They really controlled the game well and only gave up one fast break the entire night.

KU beat Dartmouth 83-32. Why they scheduled the game, I don't know. I know we lost to ORU and all, but I'd like to see some better opponents. And an occasional noncon road game.

yeah, at least bring in Penn or Princeton. Dartmouth is hideous, even for a minor-conference school.

UCLA goes to 5-0 as they beat Cal State Long Beach 88-58. Looked real sloppy in the first half, but took control in the second half for the blow out at Pauley.

Josh Shipp with career-high 24 points, Darren Collison with a career-high 9 steals (2 shy of Tyus Edney's school record of 11 in 1994).

I didn't expect IU to win (especially with Stemler out), but I wasn't impressed with their play all that much. They still have absolutely no offensive plan, from what I can tell. They can't get DJ posted up underneath, and when they do, they can't get him the ball properly. He's also got to get better at passing out of the double-team. The poor shooting at the free throw line is inexcusable. Calloway, Ratliff and Wilmont did not show up, at all. Allen was terrible (again).

The amount of Suhr love going around is too much. He makes some good plays, and he makes some terrible plays. I don't know why everyone is so in love with him except that he's a little white guy that dives around a lot. If he's logging 25 minutes a game, they are in trouble IMO.

Basset and Shaw played well, as did Mike White (aside from terrible free throw shooting). They had plenty of oppurtunities to win that game and couldn't take advantage. Duke didn't play that well.

Big Ten gets its ass kicked in the challenge once again. They never have won this thing i dont think. Jeez. Well they do well in the tournament at least but this is getting ridiculous.

They should have a Big Ten-ACC challenge in football... then the Big Ten would show them who's boss.

As a fan of the ACC (I grew up in North Carolina), and an alumnus of the Big Ten (Northwestern), I'm a little torn on this idea. Obviously, the ACC would be destroyed. Northwestern might even win, which is about as common as Halley's Comet.

Even if they did do it, though, college basketball's clear superiority over college football would win the day for the ACC (man the BCS is stupid).

Oh - and I'm pumped for the OSU - UNC game tonight. Should be a good one, and it turns out that I will be able to watch most of it!

Here's hoping Carolina pulls it off - I might not be in a real good mood otherwise.

Let's see....we'll even leave poor Duke out of it:

OSU vs. Wake Forest.....OSU

UM vs. Ga. Tech.....UM

Wisc vs. Va Tech....Wisc

PSU vs. BC.......toss up

Purdue vs Maryland........Maryland

Minnesota vs. Clemson......Clemson

Indiana vs. Miami......Miami

Iowa vs. FSU.....toss up

NU vs. Virgina....no idea

MSU vs. NC State.....who cares?

Illinois vs. UNC.....again....

I guess I don't know enough about the crappy ACC teams, but if you stack them up by final standings, it looks like the Big 10 is dominant at the top, and then it gets more even lower down

Well, Holy Cross played at Syracuse last night and only lost 72-64. Not bad at all. I think we should be pretty good this year - hopefully better than friggin Bucknell.

You out rebounded us and had to come from behind but couldn't quite make it over the hump. Willard was pretty pleased that Syracuse would play him as they have had a tough time getting the "big" schools to play them since they've done pretty well in the NCAA's. I think you guys will do quite well.

Yeah, we haven't gotten many games against the big conferences recently. Usually BC, because it's a rivalry (or at least was a rivalry, once upon a time). This year we have only two real tough non-conference games, Syracuse and Duke, and a few other competitive ones. I'm sure it was a good experience for the team.

HC has rebounded all of their opponents this year, which was surprising to me. I read Willard's website, and one of the things he was really harsh about was the team's softness early in the year. He also wrote this the other day, which I thought was kind of neat:

After we arrived back on campus I gave Torey a ride down to his dorm and asked if everything was alright. He told me everything was fine, but that he had been up to 4 AM the night before working on two term papers that were due. He knew with our coming travel schedule and four games in eight days , three on the road he had to do it. He said he felt "dead" at the start of the second half and had difficulty focusing. When I looked at the box score he was 4-6 from the field,3-4 from the line, with 6 assists and 2 turnovers. Not too shabby for someone who had gotten virtually no sleep the night before. Another example of what our guys have to deal with at a school like the Cross. The average fan should think about that before they publicly criticize a player. There is a lot more to take into account than meets the eye when you play in our program. Just another example of how Keith and Torey are young men who hold themselves accountable. Torey never told the team why he didn't have his usual energy, because he would never want them to think he was excusing himself. I drove home that night feeling once again really fortunate to have the opportunity to coach our kids.

I've always liked Ralph since he was here in the 80's and that was pretty nice of him to say that.

You have to beat Duke and build up that resume so if you lose to Bucknell or some other team you can have that on other bubble teams.

The Wisc-VT game would probably be a tossup.

He's a really good coach - HC is lucky to have him. If he were younger and not set at his alma mater, I'm sure he'd have major-conference teams looking at him. That team was completely in the tank when he arrived, and he took them to a PL title in just two years. He also did something similar with Western Kentucky, his first job. His only failure was at Pitt - he did have five years - but Howland took them to a 29-6 record a couple of years later using players that Willard recruited.

Not going to happen. HC just isn't athletic enough, and they'll probably get smoked. The Patriot League will never get two teams in, unless HC or Bucknell turns into the Gonzaga of the East someday. I suppose it'd be possible if HC lost to Syracuse, Duke and then Bucknell in the Patriot League final, leaving them w/three losses - but that's a lot to expect, given road games against Providence and Dayton (who beat Louisville), and two games earlier in the year against Bucknell. It'll probably come down to HC and Bucknell, just like the last two years. Bucknell has a really good big guy who's a senior - until he graduates, I'd have to say Bucknell is the favorite.

Bucknell was going to be in as an at-large last year if they had won the Patriot League or not.

Jeez, when did you attend/graduate? NU's no powerhouse, but we have won 3 conference titles and attended 5 bowls in the past 11 years...
